About The Position

The Indigenous Student Success Manager is responsible for leading the recruitment, engagement, and retention of Native American and Indigenous students at Green River College and managing the Indigenous Student Success Center. This position collaboratively works with Washington State tribal nations to develop positive relationships that align with GRC initiatives, with an emphasis on fostering relationships with the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe and the Muckleshoot Tribal College. This position reports to the Director of the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and supports the development of culturally relevant student support services for Indigenous students. Green River College's student body is made up of approximately 41% Academic Transfer students, 34% Professional-Technical students, 15% Adult Basic Education student, and 3% Applied Bachelor degrees. Green River College has four campuses, including the main campus in Auburn, Washington, with satellite campuses in Kent, downtown Auburn, and Enumclaw. Green River programs serve high school graduates, Running Start students (dual enrollment in local high schools and the college), those seeking retraining for the workforce, international students, students learning English, and Continuing Education students. Green River's service areas are increasingly ethnically diverse, comprising African Americans, African immigrants, Asian Americans, Asians, Latinx, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders, and Middle Eastern Americans, among other communities. Requirements

  • Associate degree or equivalent work experience
  • At least three (3) years working with Native and Indigenous students.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and/or lived experience of Tribal protocols, cultures, histories, sovereignty, and government-to-government relations, particularly for Washington’s Federally Recognized Tribes, but also for other American Indian/Alaskan Native and Indigenous Peoples
  • Willingness to collaborate with Native and Indigenous communities, specifically with and the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe and the Muckleshoot Tribal College.
  • Familiarity with regional WA tribes surrounding Green River College.
  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to equity in working with students and colleagues from underrepresented, marginalized, and underserved communities.
  • Proficient and/or ability to learn various software applications including Microsoft Suite, Office 365, EAB Navigate, ctcLink, etc.

Nice To Haves

  • Member of a Washington State and/or U.S. Tribal Nation
  • Proven success in developing/co-developing course curriculum in Native American studies.
  • Three (3) years or more working in a community and technical college system
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Higher Education, Interdisciplinary Studies, Social Work, American Indian Studies, Native American Studies, Ethnic Studies, Multicultural Studies or related interdisciplinary fields or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and staff the Indigenous Student Success Center (ISSC), including supervising student leadership positions.
  • Provide information and navigation of student support services to students, staff, faculty, program participants and/or the public regarding services provided, resources, and activities.
  • Apply knowledge and expertise related to inclusive practices in office operations and on-campus partnerships
  • Actively listen and exercise independent judgement and critical thinking skills to determine the needs of students and others served.
  • Support the functions of ODEI’s operations and services.
  • Foster and maintain working relationships with the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe, the Muckleshoot Tribal College, and regional WA tribal communities.
  • Identify and develop partnerships with relevant community, state, government and educational organizations that support Native and Indigenous students.
  • Seek alignment and consultation with the Washington Community and Technical Colleges American Indian & Indigenous Advisory Board (WCAAB) and the SBCTC Tribal Government Affairs (TGA).
  • Participate in the Cultural Growth Group which advises the President and Executive team on American Indian and Indigenous Affairs at Green River College.
  • In collaboration with the President’s Cultural Growth Group, support the development and maintaining MOU/MOA with tribal nations.
  • Collaborate with the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe, the Muckleshoot Tribal College, and regional WA tribal communities to develop and implement best practices for supporting Native and Indigenous students in Student Affairs.
  • Develop, lead, and implement coordinated strategies in collaboration with Recruitment and Outreach, the Tribal Pathways Manager, and campus partners in Tribal relations, Indigenous student success.
  • Support the hiring (via recruitment, serving on hiring committees, etc.) and retention of Native and Indigenous staff, faculty, and student leadership positions through collaboration with Human Resources.
  • Collaborate with departments in Student Affairs, Instruction, and other key partners to provide training and educational opportunities on histories, ways of knowing, and best practices in supporting Native and Indigenous communities (i.e. Muckleshoot Tribe, WA Tribes, American Indian Tribes, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders).
  • Actively participate in the planning and implementation of student leadership hiring Plan, develop and implement Native and Indigenous cultural activities and programs through the Diversity Educational Series
  • Supervise, train, and manage Native and Indigenous Peer Navigator(s); coordinate weekly meetings and quarterly evaluations with the Assistant Director of ODEI and report updates to the Director and ODEI Team.
  • Work collaboratively with Assistant Director of ODEI to develop and facilitate the Peer Mentorship Programs.
  • Follow-up with current and prospective Native and Indigenous students through phone, mail, ODEI Canvas shell, and electronic communication as it pertains to enrollment, retention and completion.
  • Maintain familiarity with all college policies and procedures, especially those related to enrollment functions and FERPA.
  • Remain professionally current by participating in trainings related to leadership development, diversity, equity & inclusion, serving first-generation, students of color, Native and Indigenous students, and underrepresented students.
