About The Position

The Institute for Applied Behavior Analysis (IABA) is seeking a compassionate, people-oriented Independent Living Skills Companion (SLS) to support individuals with developmental disabilities in the Camarillo community. This role involves assisting adults with physical or mental challenges in their everyday lives, fostering meaningful connections, teaching independent living skills, and increasing adaptive behaviors. The position offers fulfillment and satisfaction through direct community impact.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of training and experience in providing support services for individuals with physical or developmental disabilities, OR an A.A. degree in psychology or a related field.
  • Proven experience as a personal care assistant.
  • Committed to health & safety.
  • Well-organized and reliable.
  • Excellent communication and people skills.
  • Positive and compassionate attitude.
  • Strong ethics.
  • Physical stamina.
  • CPR certified.
  • A valid driver’s license.
  • Own a reliable vehicle.
  • Must be willing to take public transportation with individuals.
  • Must have proof of auto insurance.
  • Must have own reliable vehicle to transport clients.
  • Must be willing to take public transportation.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in positive behavior supports.
  • Experience caring for the elderly or sick.
  • Preferred experience with challenging behaviors, dressing/grooming.

Responsibilities

  • Support clients in their daily routines, including nutrition, self-care, social interactions, personal relationships, and money management.
  • Provide emotional support to clients.
  • Act quickly and responsibly in cases of emergency.
  • Facilitate meaningful community connections.
  • Establish friendships.
  • Explore and participate in a variety of recreational and educational activities with clients.
  • Teach independent life skills.
  • Increase helpful, adaptive behaviors.
  • Implement behavior plans.
  • Manage behavioral escalations.
  • Assist with daily living needs.
  • Enter private residences.
  • Access confidential health and personal information.
