About The Position

Southwest Ontario Aboriginal Health Access Centre (SOAHAC) is a diverse, multiservice Indigenous health and wellness agency, who proudly operates Nshwaasnangong Child Care and Family Centre. Nshwaasnangong is a place for Indigenous young children and families to honour, rekindle, and express their identities as Indigenous Peoples; where kindness and compassion helps everyone to have a sense of belonging; where we nurture our well-being, while living in sync with community and all creation, where we engage deeply with questions and possibilities. Our Centre offers licensed childcare and a nurturing environment for up to 88 children, ages 0-6, to learn, develop, and connect with their Indigenous culture. Our Child Care Centre is adjoined with our Family Centre that provides a place for young children, families, and youth to participate in ceremonies, land-based learning, knowledge exchange and connect with community supports. Reporting to the Childcare Program Supervisor, the Inclusion Support Educator works directly within the classroom to provide individualized, responsive support to children with diverse developmental, social, emotional, or physical needs. This role is grounded in relationship, co regulation, and a strengths-based approach, supporting each child’s sense of belonging, identity, and wellbeing. The Inclusion Support Educator works alongside educators to support inclusive environments, contributes to the development and implementation of Individual Support Plans, and collaborates with families, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and external partners to ensure care is holistic, culturally grounded, and responsive to each child.

Requirements

Post-secondary diploma plus experience in one or several of the following fields: Early Childhood Education, Applied Behavioural Analysis, Child & Youth, Behavioral Support, Special Education
At least 3 years’ experience working with children with physical, cognitive or behavioural needs, especially in a childcare setting
Knowledge of the Indigenous histories, cultures, values, creation stories, and language of the Indigenous population in the London area
Training and experience in a field that relates to the needs of children with Special Needs or differing abilities/diagnoses
Able to meet the legislative requirements for working in a licensed childcare setting
Knowledge of theories and practices applicable to the children’s mental health field and special education
Demonstrates a commitment to working in an inclusive environment responding with sensitivity and personal awareness to diverse needs and challenges
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Able to interact and collaborate with staff, students and families in a professional manner
Strong organizational skills with the ability to work effectively as a team and independently
Flexibility regarding assigned working hours
Willingness to participate in Indigenous Cultural Safety Training, teachings and ceremonies.
Access to reliable transportation
Up-to-date First Aid and CPR Certificates
A current and satisfactory vulnerable sector police check is a condition of employment
Up-to-date immunizations and records

Responsibilities

Supports child care team in the implementation of children’s Individual Support Plans.
Provide assistance in child care settings to model behaviours and assist educators in promoting healthy social-emotional development.
Provides individualized and responsive support to children with diverse developmental, social emotional, and regulatory needs, including those with identified or emerging needs such as autism, developmental disabilities, FASD, and mental health considerations.
Support the implementation of specialized programming as directed by professional staff (e.g., Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech and Language Pathology)
Collects and documents data, related reports, and child records for the purpose of ongoing behavior intervention service planning and review.
Provides assistance with de-escalating student behaviors and reintegration back into the classroom.
Assist with documentation to support the effective monitoring of the child’s progress and individual support plan.
Keeps up-to-date on relevant information as it concerns early childhood education and maintains any required registrations with professional regulatory bodies.
Role models behaviour management strategies for co-workers and promotes discussion and problem solving within the team to best meet the needs of the children identified as requiring enhanced support.
Assists children with personal and medical care which may include feeding, dressing, toileting, hygiene, lifting and positioning and assistance with mobility.
Works with leadership to support families, ensuring the family’s specific needs are met and plans for successful outcomes.
