We are currently seeking an Animal Master Technician. This position is a full-time opportunity located in West Jefferson, OH. Battelle's Biomedical Research Center is home to more than 200 scientific staff with expertise spanning aerobiology, safety toxicology, pathology, microbiology, and chemistry. Our team works collaboratively to develop and test novel drugs and medical countermeasures from discovery through FDA approval within a high-containment facility that includes a highly toxic material test facility and BSL-1, BSL-2, and BSL-3 laboratories. In this role, you will support toxicology and chemistry laboratory activities focused on evaluating medical countermeasures for highly toxic materials and infectious organisms using animal research models. Consistently maintaining high levels of safety and accuracy is always paramount.

Requirements

Associate's degree or higher in biology, animal science, or a related life science field
Minimum of 10 years of laboratory experience
General knowledge of rodent toxicology and demonstrated experience adhering to NIEHS Division of Translational Toxicology (DTT) Study Specifications
Experience with care and data collection of pregnant rodents and their offspring, including collection of observations related to toxicity
High degree of manual dexterity and ability to work while wearing a respirator
Ability to frequently bend and stoop; must be able to lift 50 lbs. to waist level and 25 lbs. to shoulder level; ability to remain on feet for the majority of the work shift
Willingness to work in BSL-2 and/or BSL-3 (biocontainment) environments and ability to wear appropriate respiratory protection
Willingness to be immunized with FDA-licensed vaccines and Investigational New Drugs (INDs) recommended for individuals at occupational risk of exposure to biological agents
Ability to obtain/maintain enrollment in applicable personnel reliability programs, requiring the ability to pass commercial and/or federal background investigations
Ability to obtain/maintain DoJ Security Risk Assessment (SRA) approval and CDC approval to work with BSAT material
Willingness to participate in random drug screening
Willingness to work weekends, overtime, and holiday hours as needed
Demonstrated technical knowledge sufficient to perform routine assignments and operate basic equipment following standard procedures
Demonstrated ability to perform routine, specified analysis of data
Must be a US Citizen

Responsibilities

Performing rodent husbandry, restraint, blood collections, dose administration, and metabolism collections with a high degree of accuracy
Conducting rodent toxicology assessments including body weights, clinical observations, and food and water consumption
Performing perinatal toxicology assessments including parturition and littering, pup identification, sexing, body weights, clinical observations, and morphologic development (anogenital distance, vaginal opening, and balano-preputial separation)
Collecting, recording, analyzing, documenting, and reporting results with a high degree of accuracy
Working with hazardous materials in a controlled environment while maintaining strict safety standards and procedures
Performing routine laboratory procedures with a high degree of accuracy
Learning and refining new laboratory skills and techniques
Maintaining thorough written and verbal communication with supervisors, study directors, and coworkers
Understanding and following all relevant SOPs, facility guidelines, and security protocols
Regularly cleaning and maintaining laboratory facilities and equipment
Supporting sanitization, repair, and maintenance of caging, carts, and other equipment
Assisting in the disposal and removal of waste from the facility
Maintaining an excellent attendance record and punctuality across all projects
