About The Position

The In-School Suspension (ISS) Coordinator is responsible for supervising students assigned to In-School Suspension (ISS) while maintaining a safe, structured, and respectful learning environment. This role ensures students continue academic instruction during disciplinary assignments, promotes positive behavior, reinforces school expectations, and collaborates with school administrators, teachers, counselors, and families to support student success. The ISS Monitor is responsible for maintaining accurate documentation, monitoring student progress, and ensuring all ISS procedures are implemented consistently in accordance with Berkeley Charter Education Association policies and applicable federal, state, and South Carolina Department of Education laws, rules, and regulations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Previous experience working with school-aged children, behavior management, youth development, education, or student support services preferred.
  • Knowledge of effective classroom management and positive behavior intervention strategies.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with students, families, and staff.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.
  • Ability to de-escalate conflict and respond appropriately to student behavioral concerns.

Nice To Haves

  • Associates or Bachelors degree in Education, Criminal Justice, Psychology, Human Services, or a related field preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise students assigned to In-School Suspension (ISS) in a structured, safe, and productive learning environment throughout the school day.
  • Maintain appropriate student-to-staff supervision and ensure the safety and well-being of students at all times.
  • Enforce school rules, behavioral expectations, and ISS procedures consistently and fairly.
  • Provide students with assigned classwork, monitor completion of academic assignments, and communicate with teachers regarding student progress and completed work.
  • Maintain a quiet learning environment that minimizes disruptions and encourages student accountability.
  • Document student attendance, behavior, assignment completion, and other required records accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with administrators, teachers, counselors, intervention staff, and families to support student behavioral growth and successful reintegration into the classroom.
  • Assist students in reflecting on behaviors that resulted in disciplinary action and reinforce positive decision-making strategies.
  • Monitor student behavior and implement appropriate behavior management techniques consistent with school policies.
  • Ensure confidential handling of student information in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and applicable district and school policies.
  • Assist with student arrival, dismissal, transitions, lunch, and other supervisory responsibilities as assigned.
  • Report student safety concerns, behavioral incidents, or emergency situations promptly to school administration.
  • Participate in professional development, staff meetings, and required training.
  • Maintain the ISS classroom, instructional materials, and records in an organized and professional manner.
  • Uphold school policies and procedures.
  • Any other duties as assigned.
