About The Position

Kemper is seeking Legal Counsel for its Chicago, Illinois location. The role offers the opportunity to strategize cases, exercise sound business judgment, and work with a sense of urgency. The attorney handles assigned legal matters referred to Staff Counsel by the Claims Department, develops and maintains case strategies and files, and keeps claims handlers informed of significant activity. The position requires membership in the State Bar, maintenance of required licensing and continuing education, and travel as needed.

Requirements

• At least 3 years of experience as a trial attorney.
• Membership in the State Bar and maintenance of all necessary licensing and continuing education requirements.
• Travel as needed.

Responsibilities

• Handle legal work on assigned cases.
• Aggressively pursue files referred to Staff Counsel by the Claims Department.
• Create and maintain a documented strategy for each assigned case, including a synopsis of intangible factors such as the judge, plaintiff attorney, and aggravating factors.
• Develop, organize, and maintain document files consisting of pleadings, briefs, and memorandums.
• Prepare and submit timely status reports to claims handlers on significant activities as they occur, and no less often than every 60 days.
• Ensure all files are properly documented and organized.
• Respond promptly and timely to telephone calls and correspondence.
• Use or ensure the use of case management software to maintain case notes, diary, calendar, and billing in accordance with company guidelines, procedures, and legal and ethical requirements.
