About The Position

We are seeking an experienced, compassionate, and engaging tutor with Orton-Gillingham training and certification to work one-on-one with a Grade 1 student who has been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and requires specialized literacy support. The student benefits from structured, evidence-based instruction, patience, consistency, and positive encouragement. The ideal tutor will have experience working with young learners and students with learning differences, and will be skilled at creating a supportive, engaging, and confidence-building learning environment. Familiarity with autism and the ability to adapt instruction to meet the student's unique learning needs is highly desirable. This is an in-home tutoring position located in Maple Ridge.

Requirements

  • Must be able to travel to Maple Ridge for in-home tutoring sessions.
  • Must hold Orton-Gillingham certification (Associate, Certified, or equivalent recognized training).
  • Experience working with students with dyslexia and other language-based learning differences.
  • Available for 2–3 hour sessions, 2–3 days per week.
  • Patient, positive, encouraging, and able to build strong rapport with students.
  • Strong understanding of structured literacy instruction and multisensory teaching methods.
  • Able to adapt lessons to meet the student's individual learning needs and pace.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to provide regular progress updates to parents.
  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada and able to travel to South Surrey.
  • Include details of your Orton-Gillingham training, certification, and experience working with students with dyslexia or other reading and writing challenges when applying.

  • Familiarity with autism and the ability to adapt instruction to meet the student's unique learning needs is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Assess the student's current literacy skills and develop an individualized learning plan.
  • Deliver structured, sequential, multisensory reading and spelling instruction using Orton-Gillingham methodologies.
  • Support the development of phonological awareness, decoding, encoding, fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension skills.
  • Monitor progress and adjust instruction as needed.
  • Maintain lesson notes and provide ongoing feedback to parents regarding student growth and areas of focus.
  • Foster confidence, resilience, and a positive attitude toward learning.
