Greater Bergen Community Action is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Immigration Paralegal to assist an attorney in providing high-quality, client-centered immigration legal services. This part-time position (20 hours per week) is ideal for someone passionate about making a community impact and helping individuals navigate the immigration process with dignity and care.

Requirements

  • Experience working with diverse communities.
  • Strong communication skills required, both written and verbal.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Valid New Jersey driver's license and access to reliable transportation required.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred bachelor's degree in paralegal studies, criminal justice, or legal studies.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of immigration legal experience preferred; nonprofit experience is a plus.
  • Familiarity with New Jersey institutions and social service systems preferred.
  • Fluency in Spanish is strongly preferred.
  • Experience working within an interdisciplinary team environment strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts client intakes and gathers relevant background information and documentation.
  • Assists in the preparation and filing of immigration applications and petitions (e.g., family-based petitions, naturalization, adjustment of status, humanitarian relief, limited-scope filings with the Immigration Court, etc.).
  • Draft forms, declarations, cover letters, and supporting documentation for attorney review.
  • Communicates with clients regarding case status, document requests, and appointment scheduling.
  • Organizes and maintains legal paperwork, files, exhibits, and other important information for clients.
  • Tracks deadlines and ensures timely filing of applications and responses.
  • Stays current on immigration legal procedures and regulations relevant to the paralegal field of practice.
  • Conducts various types of research related to laws, legal articles, and other information relevant to cases.
  • Performs a variety of administrative tasks, including filing paperwork, scanning and uploading case documents, answering phones, and sending emails.
  • Provides administrative and logistical support for legal clinics and community outreach events.
  • Disseminates information about the program to various community groups to ensure adequate client awareness of existing services.
  • Maintains client records and program performance statistics and prepares reports as required by funding agencies and GBCA.
  • Conducts data entry and reporting in various database systems, e.g., EmpowOr, LawLogix.
  • Maintains confidentiality and adheres to ethical and professional standards.
