About The Position

The Imaging Patient Assistant is responsible for transporting patients between departments, escorting patients, families, and visitors, and utilizing radiology computer systems for various tasks. This role involves assisting patients with exam preparation, transferring them to and from exam rooms, and providing basic instructions regarding routine procedures. The assistant also manages exam room organization, cleaning, stocking, and equipment maintenance. Additionally, they handle patient and visitor greetings, answer phones, schedule appointments, and act as a liaison between physicians and technologists. Responsibilities include providing radiology reports and images, managing health information records, and documenting patient observations. The role also entails routine maintenance and quality monitoring of imaging equipment, and assisting with MRI implant screening as needed. The position requires the ability to provide age-appropriate care and demonstrate knowledge of growth and development principles.

Requirements

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) required upon hire unless department leader has determined it is not required.
  • High School Graduate.
  • No experience required.
  • Competent in IV insertion and venipuncture, based on department need.
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to effectively communicate with a variety of patients, staff and physicians.
  • Excellent customer service and organizational skills.
  • Intermediate computer skills including experience in using computer applications/systems and electronic mail.
  • Must be able to follow directions and work well both independently and with technologists, physicians, and patients.

Responsibilities

  • Transports patients between departments and escorts patients, families, and visitors as needed.
  • Uses radiology computer systems to generate requisitions, check schedules, and obtain pertinent patient information.
  • Assists patient in preparation for exam and transferring patients to and from exam rooms.
  • Provides basic instruction to patients regarding routine procedures, i.e. changing clothes, position for exams, etc.
  • Organizes and prepares exam rooms and work areas, including cleaning, stocking, ordering supplies, and maintaining equipment.
  • Greets patients and visitors and responds to routine requests for information, reports or film loans.
  • Promptly answers telephone, screens calls, schedules patient appointments, and takes messages.
  • Acts as a liaison between ordering physician, radiologist, and technologist.
  • Provides radiology reports and/or radiographic images to staff, physicians, patients and/or family upon request.
  • Files, retrieves, and releases health information records and films.
  • Compiles film jackets/discs and completes required forms/documentation.
  • Documents requested information and promptly communicates observations, concerns, and needs of the patient with physicians and other members of the health care team.
  • Completes routine maintenance and quality monitoring of imaging equipment using appropriate technique when cleaning, sterilizing and caring for instruments and other equipment.
  • Assists with the screening and documentation of MRI implants based on department need.
  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures.
