About The Position

Skorpios Technologies, Inc. is an innovator in heterogeneous integration of silicon photonic technology and semiconductor development. We are rapidly expanding our technical team and are in search of a top-level III-V & Active Laser Scientist. This is a high-impact opportunity to work on highly differentiated, disruptive technology within a motivated, high-performance environment. Job Purpose The III-V & Active Laser Scientist is responsible for the design, modeling, and development of high-performance active components—specifically high-power/high-efficiency lasers—to be integrated into Skorpios’ unique Silicon Photonics platform. This role focuses on supporting next-generation Data Communications solutions by bridging the gap between theoretical device physics and scalable manufacturing.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. (preferred) or M.S. in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Material Science, or a related discipline with an emphasis on high-speed III-V components.
  • 10+ years of experience in photonics device design, with a proven track record of success from concept to manufacturing.
  • Deep understanding of Lasers, MZM, and photodiode physics, including quantum effects and band structures.
  • Ability to thrive and work hard in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Proficiency with software design tools such as Ansys Lumerical, Zemax, and Speos.
  • Ability to work with large datasets and utilize statistical analysis tools (e.g., JMP or Minitab) to drive design iterations.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills; ability to present complex technical problems to a diverse audience.
  • Strong understanding of III-V and RF design circuitry, epitaxy constraints, and carrier diffusion.
  • Must be a 'U.S. person' within the meaning of ITAR (U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident, Political Asylee, or Refugee).

Responsibilities

  • Design and simulate high-efficiency III-V lasers, including DFB and tunable architectures, tailored for heterogeneous integration.
  • Model resistance, capacitance, and thermal effects to optimize high-speed performance and optical-to-electrical conversion efficiency.
  • Perform impedance matching over large frequency ranges and optimize optical mode matching for seamless integration with silicon waveguides.
  • Establish tolerance and process design rules; lead Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and reliability initiatives to ensure high-yield fabrication.
  • Direct HPIC (Heterogeneous Photonic Integrated Circuit) layout of components and lead DOE (Design of Experiments) for design validation testing.
  • Work closely with process engineers to define fabrication methods and with the characterization team to analyze RF/optical S-parameters and device reliability.
  • Support and lead design reviews, presenting complex data and performance reports to internal peers and stakeholders.
