Ignition Software Project Manager,

Barry-Wehmiller
•$140,000 - $180,000

About The Position

BW Design Group is seeking a specialist-level professional to own complex software and DevOps engagements from end to end. The role may lead multi-team projects combining custom applications, Ignition, integrations, and platform work. It works independently except in the most complex situations, solves complex problems, and may lead functional teams or projects while coaching, delegating to, and reviewing the work of less experienced team members. The Project Manager is accountable for both delivery and commercial outcomes, including project financials, delivery-model design, iterative-work proposals and estimates, and client relationships through negotiation, change, and escalation. The role coordinates scrum teams, project plans, staffing, risks, releases, vendors, deployments, and client reviews. It also supports project recovery, follow-on work, and the development of the firm's delivery standards and practices. The position is based within one of BW Design Group's 45 US offices and involves working with colleagues and clients. Travel to client sites is required as needed for go-live, commissioning, and meetings. The pay range is approximately $140,000–$180,000 plus bonus; actual compensation may vary based on qualifications and location.

Requirements

  • In-depth knowledge of agile delivery methods and hybrid models suited to fixed-price and milestone-based contracts.
  • Ability to independently plan and control complex, multi-team software engagements.
  • Proven ability to coordinate dependent teams and integrate their work into a single release plan.
  • Strong command of project financials, including margin management, revenue recognition, and forecast accuracy.
  • Proficiency leading proposal development, estimating, and commercial negotiation for iteratively delivered work.
  • Strong contract literacy, including terms, acceptance criteria, change orders, and claim avoidance.
  • Advanced risk management across technical, commercial, schedule, and relationship dimensions.
  • Working command of delivery metrics, including DORA measures, and the judgment to act on them.
  • Technical depth in the software development lifecycle, CI/CD, GitOps, containers and Kubernetes, and infrastructure as code sufficient to challenge estimates, architecture trade-offs, and release plans.
  • Working knowledge of Ignition as an application development platform and of SCADA, MES, and historian systems and their delivery implications.
  • In-depth understanding of manufacturing operations in consumer products, food and beverage, life science, and industrial sectors.
  • Proven ability to serve as an escalation point and resolve client-facing conflict.
  • Experience managing subcontractors, vendors, and third-party delivery partners.
  • Ability to coach and mentor project managers, technical leads, and client product owners.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, including reporting to client management.
  • Ability to work independently, seeking guidance only in the most complex situations.
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent engagements with competing priorities.
  • Willingness to travel to client sites as needed.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, Engineering, Business, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and professional experience.
  • Minimum of 8–10 years of relevant professional experience in project management, technical project delivery, or software engineering, with demonstrated ownership of complete software or platform engagements delivered using agile methods.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior hands-on experience as a software engineer, DevOps engineer, or technical lead.
  • Experience delivering software for manufacturing, operational technology (OT), or critical-facility clients.
  • Experience delivering software under validation or compliance requirements, such as GAMP 5 or 21 CFR Part 11, alongside an iterative delivery model.
  • Experience with a system integrator or engineering consultancy in a client-billable delivery environment.
  • Experience using AI-assisted tooling in delivery management, with personal accountability for its output.

Responsibilities

  • Own complete software and DevOps engagements end to end, including multi-team efforts across application, integration, and platform scope.
  • Manage commercial and delivery outcomes, including margin, revenue recognition, and forecast accuracy.
  • Design each engagement's delivery model, including cadence, milestones, and release approach suited to the contract, client change control, and team.
  • Lead proposals and estimates for iterative work, translating an initial backlog into estimates, contingency, and milestone billing structures.
  • Negotiate scope, schedules, and changes with client stakeholders, managing backlog trade-offs against contracted budgets.
  • Coordinate multiple scrum teams, including joint planning and cross-team dependency management.
  • Own engagement release strategy, including release-candidate promotion, production deployment windows, rollback plans, and client change-control approvals.
  • Work with client product owners to set product goals and priorities, and coach them in backlog ownership where needed.
  • Build and own the integrated project plan across teams, disciplines, vendors, and external partners.
  • Direct project staffing strategy in partnership with Engineering Managers.
  • Lead risk management across technical, commercial, schedule, and client-relationship dimensions, including technical debt and client-system dependencies.
  • Use delivery metrics such as sprint completion, cycle time, deployment frequency, lead time for changes, and change failure rate to improve delivery flow, applying them to teams and services rather than individuals.
  • Serve as the primary escalation point for project issues and drive resolution.
  • Manage project subcontractors, vendors, and third-party partners.
  • Lead client status, sprint, and milestone reviews and reporting to client management.
  • Coordinate phased and multi-site deployments, including acceptance testing, go-live, and operational handoff.
  • Partner with the DevOps Technical Delivery Manager and Engineering Managers on cross-team sequencing and capacity.
  • Identify and pursue follow-on work within existing accounts.
  • Coach project managers, technical leads, and engineers in agile practice.
  • Contribute to software project execution standards, project templates, and estimating practices.
  • Support troubled-project recovery, including backlog re-baselining, replanning, and client remediation.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key client contacts, including decision makers.
  • Represent BW Design Group positively and consistently with its Guiding Principles of Leadership.
  • Travel to client sites as needed for go-live, commissioning, and client meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Meet billable-hour target expectations provided by the leader during onboarding.

Benefits

  • Approximate pay range of $140,000–$180,000 plus bonus.
  • Mentorship, hands-on project experience, and structured career development opportunities are mentioned for people developing toward project manager roles.
