About The Position

McLean Hospital, part of Mass General Brigham, is seeking an IDS Pharmacist, Research Pharmacy Coordinator. This role involves planning and organizing the Pharmacy Department to ensure the proper preparation, distribution, and storage of drugs and pharmaceuticals in compliance with legal regulations and hospital standards. The position collaborates with the Director and medical/nursing staff to develop programs and policies for the safe and effective use of medications. Responsibilities include recommending and staffing the department with qualified personnel, developing training programs to ensure staff competency, and overseeing the ongoing effective operation of the department. The role also involves assessing and improving Pharmacy services, ensuring quality control and inventory levels meet hospital and patient needs, and enforcing hospital, legal, and regulatory policies. The IDS Pharmacist serves as a resource for physicians, nurses, pharmacy staff, and other patient care staff on clinical, drug distribution, and operational issues. They will oversee the daily operations of the pharmacy department, ensure proper resource allocation, and assist the Director and Pharmacy Manager in formulating policies and programs. A key aspect of this role is overseeing Pharmacy research operations in collaboration with the Director and Pharmacy Manager.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited College of Pharmacy.
  • Current pharmacy license in the State of Massachusetts.
  • Must demonstrate effective oral and written communication with all members of health disciplines.
  • Must have the ability to teach and influence the decisions of others and the ability to appropriately confront issues and solve problems.
  • Ability to prioritize, delegate and manage multiple projects and responsibilities simultaneously.
  • Ability to foster a team environment and work as a team member.
  • A Minimum of 2 years of hospital pharmacy experience needed.

Nice To Haves

  • An advanced degree is preferred.
  • Supervisory and/or managerial experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Plans and organizes the Pharmacy Department to ensure proper preparation, distribution, and storage of drugs and pharmaceuticals in conformance with legal regulations and hospital standards.
  • Ensures the development of programs, policies, and procedures that promote the delivery of the safe and effective use of medications and other quality pharmaceutical services.
  • Recommends and staffs the department with a sufficient number of professional and technical personnel.
  • Develops policies, programs, and procedures for the orientation and continuing education in order to assure staff competency.
  • Assesses and improves Pharmacy services.
  • Ensures that quality control and inventory levels consistently meet the needs of the hospital and patients.
  • Enforces hospital, legal and regulatory agency policies practices and procedures.
  • Serves as a resource to physicians, nurses, pharmacy staff and other patient care staff for clinical, drug distribution and other operational issues.
  • Oversees the daily operations of the pharmacy department and ensures that proper resources are allocated for each task.
  • Assists the DOP and Pharmacy Manager in formulating policies and programs.
  • Oversees the Pharmacy research operations in collaboration with the Director and Pharmacy Manager.
  • Supervises daily operations for all pharmacy services.
  • Actively participates in daily medication dispensing functions if needed.
  • Maintains departmental records, prepares summaries, and reports as required.
  • Regularly monitors and assures compliance of staff with efficient productivity standards.
  • Performs quality assurance tasks.
  • Completes assignments within established guidelines.
  • Coordinates and supervises periodic staff meetings to discuss issues, problems, communicate changes and/or additional policy and procedures in the department or hospital.
  • Responsible for maintaining the schedule for the department to ensure proper staffing to meet the demand of the hospital and patients.
  • Coordinates and directs the functions and activities of the department to promote prompt, accurate and efficient processing of medication orders and other tasks.
  • Organizes workflow to optimize operations.
  • Performs other duties as requested.
  • Remains current on all federal and state laws and regulations as well as clinical standards pertaining to medications and orders; and ensures their implementation.
  • Monitors pharmacy activities to assure compliance of staff with current pharmacy policies.
  • Completes mandatory continuing education requirements on an annual basis.
  • Develops, implements and coordinates orientation and training programs for new and existing staff.
  • Assists in organizing clinical educational programs for pharmacy staff as well as presentations for the hospital or other pharmacy meetings.
  • Promotes professional development of self and staff through in-service education or outside programs.
  • Assists in establishing objectives for the department and coordinates pharmacy policies and systems affecting the pharmacy and other hospital departments.
  • Monitors minutes of relevant committee meetings to ensure communication and follow through on pharmacy tasks.
  • Monitors, develops and implements all aspects of Pharmacy Department Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement activities relating to the Research Pharmacy.
  • Monitors the QI programs in the Research pharmacy.
  • Assesses and monitors the existing procedures.
  • Documents deviations/issues and follows up.
  • Inspires confidence by being well prepared, requests and gives information clearly, concisely, and calmly.
  • Shows concern by concentrating and listening, considers what is said and done, and offers assistance.
  • Demonstrates awareness of need to present oneself in a positive and professional manner.

  • Responds to drug information/pharmacy policy requests from medical/nursing staff in a timely and accurate fashion.
  • Assists in special projects as required.
  • Communicates with different disciplines regarding current or new procedures/policies.
