About The Position

The Ice Technician 1 is responsible for ensuring that all ice surfaces, field of play, and associated equipment are properly maintained, and a high standard of safety and cleanliness is met at the Grand Casino Arena and TRIA Rink. This role oversees facility operations and equipment management, including the daily operation and maintenance of the facility and all systems. This includes ice resurfacing machine(s), ice edgers, housekeeping, lighting, ice making, safety, and scoreboards. The technician will operate a Zamboni and other motorized equipment, perform skate sharpening, and handle cash transactions. They will also utilize business programs for daily work functions and communication, and report any environmental condition corrections to Operating Engineers. Responsibilities extend to completing repairs on the ice surface, dasher boards, safety shields, and other related equipment, as well as maintaining the interior and exterior of the facility, including housekeeping, snow removal, and small equipment repairs. The role involves assisting in the annual removal and installation of ice surfaces and ensuring building safety and cleanliness standards are consistently met. Daily completion and recording of indoor air quality testing, management of safety checklists, and adherence to safety requirements are also key duties. Security functions, including locking and unlocking doors and ensuring authorized access, are part of the role. The Ice Technician 1 also plays a crucial role in event preparation and game-day execution, including pregame checklists, field of play safety inspections, patching ice hazards, shoveling during TV breaks, skating during intermissions to report conditions, performing final ice inspections, and responding to emergencies on the field of play. They must be available to team and guests, interact professionally, and assist in emergency evacuations. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Must be 18 years of age or older.
Five or more years of continual experience working in an ice arena operating resurfacers with industry training programs or ten or more years with no formal industry training programs.
Ability to sharpen hockey/figure skates and minor repair experience is preferred.
Provide superior customer service.
Ability to work in varied indoor and outdoor environments.
Ability to follow written and oral direction and demonstrate strong communication skills.
Able to work independently and as part of a team.
Strong attention to detail.
Must be available to work a minimum of six shifts a month.
This position works irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, based on events.
Physical requirements include sitting, walking, standing, bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, twisting, lifting, grasping, etc.
Regularly work near moving mechanical parts.
Exposure to fumes and/or airborne particles.
Specific vision abilities required: close vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Regularly work in areas requiring hearing protection.
Work at heights up to 50 feet.
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds unaided and up to 100 pounds with assistance.
Ability to work indoors with varying temperatures and some outdoor exposure.

Nice To Haves

(STAR) Certified Ice Technician (CIT) and Safe Ice Resurfacer Operation (SIRO) course completion preferred.
High School diploma or equivalent preferred.
CPR/AED and First Aid Certifications preferred.

Responsibilities

Oversees facility operations and equipment management.
Responsible for the daily operation and maintenance of the facility and all systems, including ice resurfacing machine(s), ice edgers, housekeeping, lighting, ice making, safety, scoreboard, etc.
Responsible for operating a Zamboni and other motorized equipment.
Operate ice edger to perform basic ice maintenance daily or when required.
Ensure all ice surfaces are resurfaced according to facility schedules.
Perform Skate Sharpening.
Operate a cash register and complete cash transactions accurately.
Utilize business programs such as Outlook, Word, and Excel to complete daily work functions and communication.
Communicate any environmental conditions corrections to Operating Engineers when adjustments need to be made on HVAC or ice plant controls.
Complete repairs on ice surface, dasher boards, safety shields, and all other equipment related to the field of play to ensure a safe and high-quality environment.
Ensure the interior and exterior of the facility are properly maintained on a continuous proactive basis, including housekeeping, snow and ice removal, and general small equipment repairs (doors, walls, fixtures).
Assist in annual removal and installation of ice surfaces utilizing resurfacers, skid steers, flood cart, ice template layout, proper ice paint application, and temporary in-ice logo placements.
Ensure proper building safety and cleanliness standards are always maintained.
Responsible for the daily completion and recording of indoor air quality testing as required by the Minnesota Department of Health.
Manage and maintain safety checklists and adhere to state, federal, OSHA, and league safety requirements.
Perform TRIA facility security functions including locking and unlocking doors and ensuring only authorized people are allowed into the facility.
Maintains event preparation and game-day execution.
Responsible for ensuring that the assembly and disassembly of the facility are properly executed as dictated by programs and events.
Perform pregame checklists and inspections to field of play safety, equipment and ice depth.
Patch and repair any divots, ruts or other potential safety hazards on the ice surface.
Perform shoveling responsibilities during TV breaks along with shovel crew members, ensuring all snow is removed efficiently during TV breaks.
Skate during intermissions, notifying resurfacer operators of any adverse conditions or adjustments that need to be made.
Ensure any outflow from resurfacers is picked up.
Make a final ice inspection before the period begins, ensuring any excess water is removed and the ice is free of any adverse conditions.
Respond to any emergencies in the field of play (dashers, glass, ice, etc.) and work in unison with the Zamboni Operators and Ice Operations Attendants in resolving any issues safely and efficiently.
Required to always be available to team and guests while on duty and to interact with all guests in a professional and courteous, responsive manner.
Assist in emergency evacuations of all ice operations team members and ensure safe exit of all guests and staff in assigned work area.
