About The Position

The Department of Campus Recreation at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is seeking an Ice Arena Coordinator. This role supports the management of a 55,000 sq ft ice arena facility, which includes a 192' x 115' sheet of ice, five locker rooms, four party areas, and seating for 1,200 spectators. The coordinator will be responsible for managing daily facility operations, overseeing the concession stand and pro shop, managing facility scheduling, and hiring student employees. This position supervises student staff and acts as a backup for ice operations and maintenance, budget preparation, and auditing.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Management, Sports Administration, or a related field.
  • One (1) year (12 months) in education, training and/or work experience in events and/or program planning.
  • Demonstrated facility management experience.
  • Skill in scheduling events, programs, and activities, as well as the work of others.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of audiences.
  • Ability to adjust actions in relation to others' actions.
  • Strong comprehension skills, with the ability to process and respond to information effectively.
  • Ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense.
  • Ability to develop goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish work.
  • Ability to work effectively with staff, the public, and outside constituency groups.
  • Ability to analyze and develop guidelines, procedures and systems.
  • Must be a mandatory reporter.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Serve as secondary backup for ice operations and maintenance and Zamboni drivers, including supervision, training, and scheduling of Zamboni drivers and assisting with regular ice safety checks.
  • Directly supervise ice arena events such as hockey games, public skates, and private groups.
  • Provide leadership to staff during public skates.
  • Assist with facility scheduling for all ice arena activities, including recreational skating, intramural sports, club sports, external rentals, learn-to-skate programs, hockey leagues, tournaments, and special events.
  • Enforce established risk management protocols through training, emergency procedures, equipment operations, and customer service.
  • Assist with risk and safety training for all ice arena program staff.
  • Manage day-to-day operations of the concession stand/café and pro shop, including inventory management.
  • Serve as secondary backup for food safety and risk management components for the concession stand/Cafe.
  • Assist with special events at the Ice Arena and other Campus Recreation special events.
  • Provide recommendations for policies and procedures for the Ice Arena and disseminate and enforce established policies and procedures.
  • Manage day-to-day cash box operations for all ice arena events outside of traditional work hours.
  • Coordinate the hiring, training, scheduling, supervision, and evaluation of 120+ student employees, including reviewing applications, assisting with evaluations, and coordinating student development efforts.
  • Serve as primary backup for all payroll functions for part-time graduate and undergraduate student staff and extra help.
  • Program, manage, and oversee the Senior Recreational Hockey League.
  • Coordinate and assist in managing the Intramural hockey league.
  • Directly hire, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate all hockey officials.
  • Follow all Campus Recreation and University personnel policies.
  • Act in a public relations capacity for the Ice Arena and its programs in the absence of the Associate Director and Assistant Director of Ice Arena, including ad campaigns, speaking engagements, and facility tours.
  • Research trends and make recommendations about the strategic direction of programs.
  • Follow University and department purchasing policies and procedures.
  • Assist with tracking and compiling information and data for monthly, mid-year, and yearly reports, utilizing information to develop policies, procedures, and strategic goals.
  • Assist as directed in the development of programs, departmental objectives, and long-term planning.
  • Serve on Department and/or university committees as assigned.
  • Responsible for evening, weekend, and break coverage.
  • Participate as a member of the Campus Recreation professional staff in the development and implementation of policies and procedures.
  • Enforce and maintain Campus Recreation policies and procedures as they pertain to usage of facilities on campus.
  • Support with pick-up and drop-off for campers along with other professional staff administrative tasks when needed.
  • Assist with developing, evaluating, scheduling, and managing part-time staff positions.
  • Evaluate program satisfaction and needs assessment annually and implement strategies for retention and growth.
  • Support University of Illinois' commitment to child abuse prevention as a mandatory reporter.
