About The Position

Under general supervision, coordinates a wide variety of activities to maintain and preserve highways, shoulders, roadside areas, structures, and broad pavement surfaces and related markings/signs in safe condition within an assigned area of operations. Supervises the activities of one or more crew chief positions and assigned maintenance employees to obtain maximum production, while maintaining high standards of quality, ensures safety procedures and standards are followed and work is conducted in a safe manner, and performs related work as assigned. The individual selected will coordinate, plan, schedule, and supervise all highway maintenance operations for the Arapahoe area under the direction of the Hwy Maintenance Superintendent. Pay rate range of $27.832 per hour to $41.717 per hour. Pay rate may be commensurate with education and/or experience within fiscal constraints, if approved.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age, and possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Possession is required of a Class A Commercial Driver’s License with air brakes and tanker endorsements or ability to obtain one within 60 days of employment.
  • Loss of licenses/endorsements may result in termination of the employee.
  • Experience in the maintenance of highways, roadsides, and other pavement surfaces or to support these functions.
  • OR Experience as an operational crew chief or work coordinator involving inspection and/or maintenance of highways, structures, or similar pavement surfaces.
  • Must be able to be certified as a Hwy Maintenance Worker Senior on date of employment.
  • Must be able to report to work within 40 minutes under normal driving conditions.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Nebraska Driver’s License with Class A CDL with no restrictions on air brakes or interstate travel with a tanker endorsement.
  • Hazardous materials or tanker endorsement may be required.
  • Must possess a good driving record.
  • Knowledge and experience in highway maintenance practices and procedures and how they relate to each other.
  • Knowledge and experience in planning, assigning, directing, and evaluating staff, interpreting materials and procedure requirements, and applying them.
  • Knowledge and experience of vehicle operation methods, tools, equipment, and materials, state laws, rules, and procedures.
  • Demonstrated rendering assistance to others on difficult problems and experience in conflict resolution.
  • Required to have good communication skills, give direction, and be assertive and able to communicate a position or opinion in a respectful manner.
  • Willing and available to respond to emergencies outside regular work hours and work overtime, including weekends and holidays, and complete work assignments under hazardous conditions, bad weather, and/or high-speed traffic.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, climb, stand, and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to safely move, drag, lift 35 pounds frequently, up to 60 pounds occasionally (without assistance), and 90 or more pounds infrequently (with assistance).
  • Must maintain regular and reliable attendance to accomplish assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • Ability to communicate courteously and respectfully with all teammates and the traveling public.

Nice To Haves

  • Possession of a Nebraska Certified Pesticide Applicator’s License is also preferred.
  • Some positions may require specific certifications based on job requirements, (e.g., flagging certification, pesticide applicator’s license).

Responsibilities

  • Manage and oversee all aspects of Highway operations and maintenance in their assigned area, perform weekly or special inspections of the State Highway System, to include structures and property, find deficiencies and direct the maintenance and repairs.
  • Organize, schedule, plan, assign and supervise work activities of assigned staff to attain work goals and ensure consistent application of policies, procedures and standards.
  • Coordinates work schedules with Superintendents and Supervisors to complete projects.
  • Evaluate work performance, recommend personnel actions, respond to grievance issues and approve Kronos/leave requests.
  • Direct and maintain records and reports for daily operations and complete a daily diary.
  • Keep accurate records on personnel issues, material issues, quality of work performed with compliance to special plans/provisions and specifications.
  • Maintain accurate inventory of department resources and material.
  • Complete and maintain equipment requests, progress reports, weekly work program, road condition report (511) and other miscellaneous documents.
  • Drive a commercial vehicle, motor grader, tandem truck, loader, etc.
  • Instruct employees on safety procedures, policies, practices, and the PPE program.
  • Resolve conflict within the work group.
  • Utilize department computer applications for the 511 system, Kronos, Outlook, Excel, MDSS, etc.
  • Work with the Crew Chief’s in preparation of work schedules, reports, assignments, and equipment assignments.
  • Oversee multiple operations at one time.
  • Determine and direct emergency management responses.
  • Available for out-of-town travel occasionally.
  • May be required to perform activities anywhere in the state for emergencies or other situations as they arise.
  • Render courteous service to the public; maintain good employee relationships with department employees, public and outside agencies to include the Nebraska State Patrol.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
