About The Position

The Heart and Vascular APP Supervisor provides leadership to APPs within the department and collaborates with the cardiology and cardiac surgery faculty, APP Manager and lead APPs. The primary managerial responsibility of the supervisor is to provide professional support to the Heart and Vascular APPs at Parnassus and Stanyan, Lead APPs so there is alignment with the Heart and Vascular Center and UCSF Health. The primary clinical responsibility is to provide clinical services to cardiology or cardiac surgery inpatients. UCSF Health requires all advanced health professionals to be credentialed through the Office of Medical Affairs and Governance to practice and function in their clinical role. This applies to HVC APPs in the inpatient clinical setting at all UCSF Health sites. Credentialing and approval of standardized procedures takes between 90-120 days and must be completed prior to the first working day.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 2 years progressive responsibility of related healthcare leadership.
  • 4-6 years of recent experience as a nurse practitioner or physician assistant in CVICU Care
  • Competent to direct patient management and lead care team
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise a team and to manage the complex workflow and competing priorities involved with providing quality care as an Advanced Practitioner.
  • Solid knowledge of the clinical and operational issues for APPs performing advanced-practice care, including evaluation, testing, diagnosis, and treatment, as well as patient-care concepts, policies, outcomes measurement, quality standards, ethics issues, quality improvement, while continuing staff education and professional development
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to quickly analyze problems, determine appropriate level of intervention, and develop and apply effective solutions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective collaboration and problem solving with all levels of management and staff with ability to understand issues from different perspectives.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to train and mentor subordinates, convey complex clinical and technical information in a clear and concise manner, and prepare and present project proposals and educational opportunities for the staff.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of state and national regulatory requirements

Responsibilities

  • Supervises and coordinates the department operations including scheduling, resolves system issues, advises on work methods, provides expert level critical care clinical services to patients and families in the adult ICUs at UCSF Health based on flex needs of the program and assists with escalated issues. Ensures quality of care and serves as a role model, expert clinician, and mentor. The administrative and supervisory responsibilities fall into four major areas: 1.) Administrative; 2.) Staff Development; 3.) Education; 4.) Leadership.
  • Develops APP orientation and facilitates the integration into clinical practice. Responsible for training and competency assessments ensuring all APPs are competent in required skill sets to provide safe patient care. Pursues professional development and facilitates access for subordinate staff for training, development, and educational opportunities in all relevant specialties. Ensures that all relevant licenses and certifications are current and properly documented. Monitors compliance with state and federal regulations governing provision of care. Ensures APPs follow department policies and patient care protocols.
  • Evaluates subordinate staff and participates in decision-making on hiring, salary actions, terminations, performance ratings, and other human resources matters. Leads APP recruitment, interviewing and selection and conducts annual performance reviews. Leads progressive discipline, up to and including counseling, letters of warning, investigatory meetings, suspension, and dismissal.
  • Serves as liaison between APPs, nursing, ancillary staff, and administrative staff regarding policy, operational, clinical practice issues. Collaborate with senior management on operational and performance issues and the development of new plans and programs to improve and integrate APP functions and systems across specialties, departments, and throughout the medical center. Participates in department and division meetings and committees.
