About The Position

The HVAC Technician will troubleshoot, repair and maintain heating, ventilation and refrigeration systems used in an underground and surface mining environment. This role involves performing scheduled and unscheduled maintenance activities, inspecting, repairing, modifying, and installing HVAC equipment including refrigeration and air conditioning compressors, receivers, condensers, chillers, forced air converter units, pumps, automatic and hand valves, expansion valves, and capillary tubes. The technician will conduct regular preventive maintenance inspections of refrigeration units, isolated heating and ventilating units, including boilers, gas, and electrically operated air conditioning equipment, and make necessary adjustments or repairs. Responsibilities also include repairing or replacing defective parts in units and equipment and their controls, performing preventive maintenance on underground refrigeration units, and understanding the underground chilled water system, add water system, and condenser water system. The role requires the ability to install, replace, and service systems, components, and controls, including chillers, pumps, and related components, as well as maintenance of spray chambers. The technician will use all related meters, instruments, and tools required to properly work on refrigeration equipment and systems, repair and rebuild semi-hermetic reciprocating compressors and compressors for centrifugal refrigeration machines, and install and calibrate systems. This includes installing copper and steel tubing, repairing pipes and tubing, flushing heat exchangers, descaling tubing, and rebuilding pressure and temperature safety valves and water pumps. The role also involves testing and examining boiler operations, conducting boiler water quality tests and treatment, and adjusting boiler burner combustion. Electrical troubleshooting and repairs up to < 480v are required, with collaboration with the Electrical Department for troubleshooting and repairs of all 480v and above equipment. Reading blueprints, drawings, and specifications to understand the operation, troubleshooting, and repair of chillers and related components and systems is essential. Machinery installation, including proper procedures for installation and alignment of components and electric motors, and testing all equipment repairs are also part of the duties. The technician will perform data input for inventory and cost control tracking, complete required maintenance work orders, reports, and logs, and maintain a high standard of housekeeping. Compliance with applicable environmental laws and regulations, conducting activities in an environmentally responsible manner, and awareness of procedures to minimize environmental impacts are crucial. Following and understanding MSHA rules and regulations, environmental rules and regulations, SOPs, and work area instructions, and participating in safety and environmental activities are required. Leading by example by adhering to rules and regulations and ensuring compliance with Mine Operations department standards is expected. The role requires the ability to work and communicate with other team members and willingness to comply with all company policies and procedures, especially regarding Safety, Human Resources, and Environmental. Participation in Risk Assessment and the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) is also required. The position must meet criteria established in the Maintenance Progression System.

Requirements

High School graduate or equivalent.
Technical certificate from an accredited air conditioning and refrigeration training program.
Type I and type II refrigeration license to comply with Federal law 40CFR part 82, subpart F.
Must be able to access equipment information using electronic devices (i.e. laptop computer, tablet).
Computer literate with at least basic skills in Excel, Word and MS Outlook.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
ATF possessors clearance required.
Must complete MSHA 40-hour training or provide 5000-23 documentation of completed training.
Must pass physical and drug screen, and essential functions capacity test.

Previous experience in a mine setting preferred.

Responsibilities

Performs scheduled and un-scheduled maintenance activities.
Inspect, repair, modify and install HVAC equipment including refrigeration and air conditioning compressors, receivers, condensers, chillers, forced air converter units, pumps, automatic and hand valves, expansion valves and capillary tubes.
Conduct regular preventive maintenance inspections of refrigeration units, isolated heating and ventilating units, including boilers, gas, and electrically operated air conditioning equipment, and make necessary adjustments or repairs.
Repair or replace defective parts in units and equipment and their controls, including thermostats, automatic switches, fan controls, log switches, damper motors, louvers, relays, filters, controls, belts, compressors, heat exchangers, high limit controls, pressure controls, safety valves, and automatic gas valves.
Perform preventive maintenance on the underground refrigeration units.
Learn and understand the underground chilled water system, add water system, and condenser water system.
Install, replace, and service systems, components, and controls, including chillers, pumps, and all related components.
Maintenance of spray chambers.
Install, repair, and start up spray chambers, including piping manifolds, pumps, chamber, and tank.
Use all related meters, instruments and tools required to properly work on refrigeration equipment and systems.
Repair and rebuild semi-hermetic reciprocating compressors and compressors for centrifugal refrigeration machines.
Install and calibrate systems; install copper and steel tubing and repair pipes and tubing as necessary.
Flush heat exchangers and descale tubing.
Rebuild pressure and temperature safety valves and water pumps.
Test and examine boiler operations.
Conduct boiler water quality test and treatment.
Adjust boiler burner combustion.
Electrical troubleshooting and repairs up to < 480v.
Work with the Electrical Department team in the troubleshooting and repairs of all 480v and above equipment.
Read blueprints, drawings, and specifications to determine the operation, troubleshooting and repair of the chillers and related components and systems.
Machinery installation; Must know proper procedures for installation and alignment of components and electric motors.
Tests all equipment repairs as applicable.
Performs data input as required for inventory and cost control tracking.
Completes required maintenance work orders, reports and logs.
Maintain a high standard of housekeeping in the workplace.
Comply with applicable environmental laws and regulations.
Conducts activities and work in an environmentally responsible manner.
Is aware of procedures to minimize impacts to the environment.
