About The Position

The HVAC Technician 2 for our Facilities Department will perform maintenance-related duties utilizing HVAC skills and may occasionally exercise supervisory responsibility for a small work crew. This role operates computerized and other controls to manage, monitor, and adjust HVAC and other mechanical building systems. The work encompasses all areas of HVAC/R service and maintenance, as well as occasional plumbing, electrical, or other building maintenance support, including boilers, chillers, split systems, roof top systems, domestic hot water, mini-splits, automation and controls, pumps, valves, electrical, duct, piping, etc. The position requires performing diverse activities involving the repair and maintenance of HVAC/R equipment and facilities, with work expected inside and outside in all environmental conditions. This role has direct contact with the Converse Community and requires exceptional customer service abilities. Position requires performance of complex duties involving all aspects of HVAC, mechanical, electronic/electrical systems, including Energy Management systems, repair, trouble-shooting, installation, and preventive maintenance measures. The HVAC Technician 2 will promote teamwork, cooperation, and work to resolve challenges; the position requires work in a variety of environments and conditions. Occasionally required to perform work in support of other trades and Facilities divisions as necessary to support the objectives of the college.

Requirements

• Minimum Type 2 EPA Certification
• 2 years of experience in HVAC maintenance and/or service
• Ability to lift 50lbs
• Ability to climb ladders
• Frequently walk, push, pull, kneel, crawl, stand, reach, and lift
• Ability to work safely around and with high voltage and high-pressure equipment
• Ability to work safely at height above 30 feet
• Ability to work in cramped spaces
• Valid driver's license required
• Knowledge and experience in all fields of HVAC including heat pump, package, and split systems, boilers, chillers, pumps, building exhaust systems, controls systems and software.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instruction.
• Ability to read and work from prints and specifications
• Knowledge of typical HVAC and associated electrical and other tools, materials, and equipment.
• Good work ethic, positive attitude, professional appearance.
• Experience with industry standard safety practices and principles, and must adhere to same as well as to relevant Federal, State, and Local codes and University procedures.

Nice To Haves

• Associates degree in HVAC or closely related field and a minimum of 2 years of related experience or high school diploma and 4 years of related experience.
• EPA Universal refrigerant certification.
• Campus facilities experience in a higher education environment.
• Vocational/trade experience/training.
• Experience with computerized maintenance management systems.
• Knowledge of 3 phase power systems, building code and ASHRAE standards.
• Experience with boilers and chillers in 2-pipe and 4-pipe configurations.
• Experience with building automation and HVAC controls.

Responsibilities

• Respond to work requests.
• Ensure the maintenance and organization/inventory of assigned equipment and tools in clean, secure, and appropriate working conditions.
• Perform routine and preventive maintenance tasks including but not limited to greasing of bearings, changing oil, filters, belts, alignment of pulleys, shafts, motors, chemical treatments, cleaning of coils, tubes or other components.
• Repair, overhaul, and maintain refrigeration compressors, water chillers, boilers, pneumatic control systems, heating and air conditioning systems, refrigeration control valves, condenser coils, filters, switches, and other devices related to the operation of industrial and commercial type heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration equipment.
• Maintain and repair electronic HVAC controls.
• Perform scheduled and unscheduled testing and inspection of cooling towers, boilers, air handlers, pumps, motors, chilled water, and hot water systems and mechanical rooms.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
