About The Position

Sylvester & Cockrum (S&C) is a trusted, full-service mechanical contractor serving North Carolina and South Carolina. With a long-standing reputation for quality craftsmanship, safety, and integrity, S&C delivers commercial, institutional, and industrial mechanical and electrical services that require disciplined execution and professional field leadership. This position is responsible for fabricating and welding items using MIG/TIG and stick procedures in our duct fabrication shop, specifically welding stainless steel and black steel sheet metal. The role involves planning production schedules, reviewing drawings, coordinating priorities, performing material takeoffs, ensuring quality control, managing inventory, operating fabrication machinery, and training new employees. Additionally, the position requires transporting materials, driving a non-CDL flatbed truck, inspecting delivery vehicles, and operating forklifts.

Requirements

  • Fabricate/Weld items using MIG/TIG and stick procedures in our duct fabrication shop. Specifically, have the ability to weld stainless steel and black steel sheetmetal.
  • Lay-out, fabricate, and assemble straight duct and fittings
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Minimum 5 years of commercial HVAC sheet metal experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and shop drawings.
  • Strong knowledge of commercial HVAC duct systems.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Plan daily and weekly production schedules.
  • Review construction drawings, shop drawings, and specifications.
  • Coordinate fabrication priorities with Project Managers and field supervisors.
  • Ensure projects are completed safely, accurately, and on schedule.
  • Perform material takeoffs and assist with procurement planning.
  • Ensure quality control throughout the fabrication process.
  • Manage shop inventory, equipment, and tooling.
  • Inventory and maintain duct fabrication supplies.
  • Input straight duct and fittings into our computerized fabrication system.
  • Operate duct fabrication coil line and duct fitting plasma table.
  • Operate sheet metal shear, breaks, Pittsburg machine, and other duct fabrication machinery.
  • Fabricate and assemble roof curbs and duct roof supports.
  • Train and develop new employees.
  • Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and teamwork.
  • Assist with troubleshooting fabrication and installation challenges.
  • Transporting construction material and equipment from SCI warehouse to job sites.
  • Capable of driving large non CDL flatbed truck to make deliveries.
  • Inspecting delivery vehicle for mechanical items and safety issues.
  • Operate warehouse forklifts to load and unload trucks.
  • Possess a forklift operator’s certificate.
