About The Position

Under general supervision of shop foreman or assistants, incumbent performs skilled craftsman level trades related duties in various types of heating / air conditioning and refrigeration work. Make routine repairs, answers trouble calls, analyze problems and execute action necessary to correct mechanical/electrical problems; participate in outages when one or more employee is needed to complete a task. Ensures that E.P.A. and other regulatory agency guidelines are followed. EPA Universal Certification required. Ensure there are no unauthorized gas leaks or releases. The incumbent will, on a rotating basis, be on call for one week and work a weekend shift. Incumbent is Considered Essential Personnel in a disaster. Performs related and non-related duties as required. Incumbent will monitor, maintain adjust, and repair building HVAC systems owned or leased by the Medical University of South Carolina in order to ensure safety, environmental control and economy of mechanical, electrical, systems. Incumbent should have a working knowledge of HVAC systems including, but not limited to, Chillers, AHU, Drives, Motors, Pumps, and Refrigeration Units. The incumbent will, on a rotating basis, be on call for one week and work a weekend scheduled shift. Incumbent is Considered Essential Personnel in a disaster.

Requirements

  • EPA Universal Certification required
  • High School Degree or Equivalent
  • 3 years Work Experience
  • working knowledge of HVAC systems including, but not limited to, Chillers, AHU, Drives, Motors, Pumps, and Refrigeration Units.

Responsibilities

  • Installs, repairs, inspects HVAC/Refrigeration equipment and associated systems. This includes work on chillers, cooling towers, DX units, window units, ice machines, hot/cold rooms, motors, controls, pumps, etc for various sizes and types of HVAC systems.
  • When working on equipment, ensures there is no unauthorized gas release into the atmosphere.
  • Make installations, tests, and repairs in accordance with E.P.A. and other applicable regulatory guidelines.
  • Recharges air conditioning systems with refrigerants as necessary.
  • Reset air conditioning and refrigeration system and check for proper operation after power failure.
  • Adjusts and calibrates pneumatic and electronics controls.
  • Overhauls compressors, condensers and other equipment as needed.
  • Diagnose and repair equipment problems pertaining to air conditioning, heating and refrigeration.
  • Uses proper tools and electrical meter.
  • Coordinates repairs and inspections with Energy Management Operator for proper shutdown and startup of air conditioning systems throughout campus.
  • Supervises and instructs mechanics of lower grade.
  • Brief supervisor of any problems that may affect proper operation of equipment
  • Maintain work area and job site in clean and orderly manner and perform miscellaneous and related duties as required.
