About The Position

MJ Electric & Refrigeration is expanding and seeking an HVAC/R Service & Installation Technician to join their team. Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years of independent hands-on HVAC/R field experience (service, installation, or both)
  • Rhode Island or Massachusetts Refrigeration license
  • EPA Section 608 certification (Universal preferred; Type II minimum)
  • Working knowledge of electrical, refrigeration, and mechanical systems
  • Ability to read wiring diagrams and equipment manuals
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to manage a daily workload with minimal supervision
  • Professional appearance and strong communication skills with customers

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with both commercial and residential equipment
  • Familiarity with Service Fusion, ServiceTitan, etc dispatch software and mobile work order apps and scheduling
  • Prior experience with refrigeration systems (walk-in coolers, reach-ins, ice machines)

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and troubleshoot HVAC/R system malfunctions including heating, cooling, ventilation, and refrigeration equipment.
  • Perform repairs on furnaces, heat pumps, air handlers, condensing units, refrigeration systems, and related components.
  • Conduct routine preventive maintenance on all system types per manufacturer specifications and company standards.
  • Recover, handle, and recharge refrigerants in compliance with EPA Section 608 regulations.
  • Read and interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, and equipment manuals to guide diagnostic and repair work.
  • Test repaired systems to confirm proper operation before leaving the job site.
  • Accurately complete all work orders, service reports, and time logs.
  • Identify additional repairs or improvements needed and communicate findings clearly to the service manager.
  • Install new HVAC/R equipment including Rooftop Units, Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF/VRV) systems, chillers, split systems, heat pumps, air handlers, furnaces, and refrigeration systems.
  • Run refrigerant lines, electrical wiring, flue venting, condensate drains, and ductwork connections per job specifications and local code.
  • Perform system startup, commissioning, and performance testing on all new installations.
  • Follow installation drawings, load calculations, and manufacturer instructions to ensure correct equipment sizing and placement.
  • Coordinate with other trades and the installation crew when working on larger projects.
  • Leave installation sites clean, organized, and customer-ready at the end of every job.
  • Follow all OSHA, company, and manufacturer safety requirements at every job site.
  • Use personal protective equipment (PPE) properly and consistently.
  • Report any accidents, near-misses, or unsafe job site conditions to the supervisor immediately.
  • Maintain current EPA 608 certification and any other licenses required by state or local jurisdiction.
  • Operate all tools, equipment, and company vehicles safely and responsibly.
  • Arrive on time, in uniform, and prepared for every scheduled appointment.
  • Greet customers professionally and explain what you are doing and why in plain, easy-to-understand terms.
  • Present repair or replacement options honestly so the customer can make an informed decision.
  • Protect the customer’s home or business — use drop cloths, shoe covers, and clean up thoroughly before leaving.
  • Address customer concerns calmly and professionally; escalate to the service manager when needed.
  • Keep your company vehicle clean, organized, and stocked with commonly used parts and supplies.
  • Perform basic vehicle maintenance checks (fluid levels, tire pressure) and report any issues promptly.
  • Care for all assigned tools and equipment; report damage or loss to the supervisor immediately.
  • Track parts and materials used on each job accurately for invoicing purposes.
