About The Position

This position works out of our Abbott Park, IL in our GES Global Engineering Services division. The HVAC/Refrigeration Technician II provides 24/7 skilled-trade maintenance support across Abbott Park and associated owned or leased Lake County facilities, including manufacturing, R&D laboratories, warehouses, and offices. The technician performs advanced troubleshooting, repair, and preventive maintenance on a wide range of HVAC and refrigeration equipment, including ice machines, refrigerators/freezers, low-temperature systems, environmental chambers, incubators, freeze dryers, air dryers, dehumidifiers, stability chambers, and building HVAC systems. This role requires sound judgment, strong customer service, and a commitment to safety and quality in all service activities.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum 5+ years of formal training and experience in commercial or industrial HVAC/R system maintenance.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in all aspects of HVAC/R maintenance, with the ability to work effectively in collaborative environments.
  • Must consistently adhere to all safe‑work practices and environmental and regulatory requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • EPA certification for refrigerant recovery, handling, and disposal preferred

Responsibilities

  • Perform HVAC and refrigeration diagnostics, repairs, and preventive maintenance across diverse facility environments.
  • Service and maintain equipment including chillers, freezers, refrigerators, low‑temperature systems, freeze dryers, incubators, environmental chambers, VAV boxes, dehumidifiers, and air dryers.
  • Conduct refrigerant recovery and reclamation in compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Inspect, adjust, and repair air‑handling systems, including bearings, belts, seals, valves, actuators, and related components.
  • Troubleshoot and repair mechanical and electrical components such as motors, fans, compressors, pumps, and basic control devices.
  • Perform brazing, soldering, and installation tasks on HVAC/R equipment per Abbott Engineering Standards.
  • Utilize Building Automation Systems and environmental control systems to diagnose and resolve operational issues.
  • Execute preventive maintenance tasks, including calibration and adjustment of temperature and pneumatic controls.
  • Work as a multi‑skilled tradesperson, assisting with electrical, mechanical, pipefitting, and general building maintenance assignments as needed.
  • Perform mechanical overhauls and prepare equipment for optimal performance and regulatory inspection.
