About The Position

Northrop Grumman is seeking an HVAC Mechanic at Level 3 or Level 4 for its Cooper Crossing facility in Salt Lake City, Utah. The technician installs, services, modifies, rebuilds, and repairs air-conditioning and refrigeration systems and equipment in an industrial or commercial setting, following applicable building codes and safety regulations. The role includes inspecting equipment to identify malfunctions, performing preventive maintenance on compressors, controls, condensers, pumps, fans, and heating equipment, charging systems with refrigerant, testing for leaks, adjusting controls, fabricating and installing ductwork, and overhauling equipment.

The position also involves servicing and maintaining centralized HVAC computer systems, making program corrections, and installing and maintaining high-technology clean-room environments. The technician safely handles and places hazardous waste materials such as recovered Freon, oil, glycol, and acidic coil cleaners in proper containers for disposal by appropriately trained employees. The job follows a standard 9/80 schedule: nine-hour days Monday through Thursday and every other Friday off. Travel is 10% of the time; relocation assistance is not available.

Requirements

• Level 3: High school diploma or equivalent, with 4 or more years of additional education and/or related experience.
• Level 4: High school diploma or equivalent, with 6 or more years of additional education and/or related experience.
• Experience working in manufacturing as an HVAC technician and/or service technician.
• Section 608 EPA Universal Certification.
• Must be able to pass a background check for the Federal Safe Explosives Act (SEA).
• Servicing skills in cleaning evaporator coils, condenser coils, and cooling towers, and troubleshooting and repairing electrical/electronic circuits.
• Refrigeration system troubleshooting experience.
• Experience with electronically controlled valve systems and pneumatically controlled multi-zoned air handlers.

Nice To Haves

• Knowledge of centrifugal, screw, reciprocating, and scroll chillers.
• Experience with steam heat exchangers for hot water loop systems and steam coils.
• Knowledge of industrial ventilation.
• Experience installing and maintaining industrial refrigeration equipment and computer climate control systems.
• Welding and brazing skills; experience leak-checking with an electronic leak detector, evacuating with a micron gauge, and charging units.
• Electrical wiring experience, including low-voltage wiring.
• Understanding of Maximo CMMS.
• Building automation systems experience.
• Experience with A/C and refrigeration compressor retrofits.
• Experience servicing and installing natural gas-fired equipment.
• Experience installing and servicing food-service equipment, including freezers, refrigerators, and ice machines.

Responsibilities

• Troubleshoot refrigeration systems and work on electronically controlled valve systems and pneumatically controlled multi-zoned air handlers.
