About The Position

This position is responsible for the repair, maintenance, installation, and modernization of HVAC and refrigeration systems. The role involves troubleshooting, performing skilled work requiring manual and technical expertise, and ensuring compliance with codes and safety regulations. The HVAC Mechanic III will also inspect work completed by others, review engineering plans, and provide instruction to helpers and trainees. This role requires a strong understanding of electrical systems, including 24-volt up to 480-volt systems, and the ability to repair motors and control equipment. The position also involves driving commercial vehicles, loading/towing equipment trailers, and maintaining effective communication with staff. The role may require working overtime and assisting with emergencies outside of normal working hours. The use of smartphones, tablets, and laptops for work order systems and timekeeping is expected.

Requirements

  • High school diploma, general education degree (GED), or (4) year trade school education required.
  • Minimum (8) years’ work experience installing, maintaining, and repairing commercial HVAC and refrigeration equipment required.
  • Holds EPA section 608 universal certification required.
  • A Maryland Class C license is required.
  • A thorough knowledge of the HVAC and refrigeration trades, equivalent to the completion of a four-year apprenticeship program.
  • Working knowledge of heating plants and other mechanical systems, including electrical components and controls.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in the performance of work and working safely.
  • Ability to drive commercial-type service vehicles, trucks, and Vans.
  • Demonstrated initiative and ingenuity in analyzing the situation and making frequent technical decisions based on specifications, engineering drawings, and building codes.
  • A willingness to secure additional training as required to repair and maintain sophisticated HVAC equipment installations.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities.
  • Proficient knowledge of NFPA, as well as state and local codes related to commercial HVAC and refrigeration trade.
  • Regularly works on 24-volt up to 480-volt systems and equipment.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills, both verbally and in writing, with CCBOE staff.

  • Holds and maintains a valid Maryland State HVACR Journeyman license or Master's preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs troubleshooting, repairs, maintenance, and installation for Commercial HVAC and refrigeration equipment.
  • Performs work required for Commercial and Residential HVAC equipment troubleshooting, repair, maintenance, installation, and modernization of air conditioning and refrigeration systems and equipment.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints.
  • Works from step and extension ladders, scaffolds, man lifts, scissors lifts, aerial boom lifts, and bucket trucks.
  • Plans, organizes, lays out work, selects materials, makes accurate materials lists, and completes the installation in accordance with applicable mechanical and building codes and safety regulations.
  • Locates and determines refrigeration equipment malfunctions using various test equipment.
  • Tests, adjusts, maintains, and repairs refrigeration equipment for efficiency and safety.
  • Inspects the work completed on equipment by other individuals.
  • Reviews engineering plans, specifications, installation and maintenance manuals, and any other data to develop the best method of problem solution.
  • Assigns, instructs, and inspects the work of helpers, trainees, and tradesmen in the proper practices and procedures of the trade.
  • Installs and repairs electrical switches and relays.
  • Repairs and replaces motors and motor control equipment.
  • Loads and tows equipment trailers.
  • Practices safe work habits involving self and other employees.
  • Determines minimum stock levels of supplies necessary to maintain equipment which he repairs.
  • Assures that all work is completed in compliance with applicable safety standards.
  • Provides on-the-spot instruction to school personnel in the proper observation and preventive maintenance of the equipment.
  • Reports to his supervisor about improper care and operation, which could cause malfunctions, and undue wear and tear on the facility's equipment.
  • Performs other duties and assumes other responsibilities within his capability as assigned by the supervisor of maintenance, including those of lower-graded positions.
  • Assists in the correction of emergencies as they occur beyond normal working hours.
  • Uses smartphone, tablet, and laptop to access and enter information required for the maintenance work order system and time keeping.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Foreman.

  • Salary Range: $52,333 to $92,914, determined by years of relevant experience.
