About The Position

Behind every breakthrough in medicine is a facility that never stops performing. As an HVAC Mechanic III, you'll play a critical role in keeping the complex heating, cooling, and refrigeration systems that support Stanford Medicine’s research and education environments operating safely, efficiently, and reliably. In this hands-on role, you’ll help keep research, education, and university environments running safely, efficiently, and comfortably by maintaining and repairing complex HVAC and refrigeration systems across the Stanford School of Medicine campus. Working onsite in Palo Alto on a Tuesday through Saturday schedule, you’ll partner with facilities professionals to troubleshoot issues, optimize equipment performance, support installations, and respond to heating and cooling needs that directly impact building operations and occupant comfort. Success in this role comes from combining strong technical expertise with a proactive, service-oriented approach in a fast-paced healthcare setting. The Facilities Services division enhances health through leadership, collaboration, and innovation. Our team offers essential non-clinical support 24/7, ensuring safe operations and planning for future needs. We represent the intersection of planning, construction, general services, and facilities operations. The Facilities Infrastructure & Safety (FIS) business unit is vital in ensuring the safety, security, and operational integrity of Stanford Health Care facilities while also managing disaster preparedness and complex building systems to foster a secure healthcare environment. FIS is made up of multiple departments aligned in focus: Environmental Health & Safety, Facility Field Services, Protective Services, Security Services, Office of Emergency Management, Facilities Engineering - Systems, Operational Technology, Facilities Engineering- Infrastructure, Facilities Services Response Center, and Facilities Administration and Operations. HVAC Mechanic installs, maintains, inspects and repairs refrigeration and air conditioning equipment, pneumatic and electronic controls, heating and cooling facilities and does general maintenance work in all HVAC equipment.

Requirements

• Four (4) to six (6) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience
• Ability to adapt to and deal with change and ambiguity
• Ability to operate standard tools, instruments and equipment used on the job

• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and sketches
• Ability to solve problems and identify solutions

• Knowledge of computer systems and software used in functional area

• CADL - California Drivers License - Valid And In State required Upon Hire
• HVACEPAU – EPA Type 608 Universal Certification required. Current employees must obtain by June 1, 2019 required Upon Hire

Nice To Haves

• Associate’s Degree or equivalent from a Technical/Trade School with a certificate in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning, preferred.
• Five (5) years of health care HVAC field work, preferred
• CMM - Certified Maintenance Manager preferred

Responsibilities

• Perform preventive maintenance work on HVAC equipment in accordance with the correct procedures and recommends changes in existing equipment and conditions for better operating efficiency.
• Installs new air conditioning units and systems, connecting the systems to required services and testing for proper operation.
• Installs, calibrates, and maintains manual, automatic pneumatic and electronic controls on all HVAC equipment. Obtains assistance when necessary on complicated electronics or pneumatic controls.
• Maintains tools, equipment and work area assigned. Prepares requisitions for supplies or materials required for given, authorized work in accordance with established procedures.
• Performs welding and brazing, and soldering on HVAC equipment in accordance with recognized and proper procedures.
• Repairs, maintains, and diagnoses problems regarding centralized air handling units for both electrical and pneumatic controls, including refrigerated air conditioning units, and walk in boxes, cold rooms and chillers for certain areas. Responds to complaints for heating or cooling and makes adjustments to bring it up to the necessary comfort levels as required by the occupants.
• Tests and balances the heating, cooling, ventilating, and air conditioning to conform to the proper specifications and code requirements.
• Assists other crafts on shutdowns involving heating and cooling, and power supply for refrigerated system.
• Perform preventive maintenance, repairs, testing, and system balancing on HVAC and refrigeration equipment
• Troubleshoot pneumatic, electronic, and mechanical control systems to maintain reliable operations
• Support equipment installations, upgrades, and infrastructure projects across the campus
• Interpret blueprints, prioritize work independently, and solve complex technical challenges
• Bring HVAC trade experience, strong communication skills, and comfort using mobile technology for work management
