About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is seeking an HVAC Mechanic I to perform journey-level work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of air-conditioning systems and associated equipment. This role involves maintaining refrigeration units, troubleshooting and repairing electrical and control systems, performing preventive maintenance, and installing ductwork and piping. The position reports to the Maintenance/Construction Supervisor III and may involve training or supervising helpers.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of progressive experience in the installation, maintenance, or repair of air conditioning chillers, air handling, chilled water distribution and control systems
  • Current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations part 82, subpart F.

  • Working knowledge of the standard practices, methods, materials, and equipment used in the operation, maintenance, and repair of air-conditioning and refrigeration systems

Responsibilities

  • Identifying the cause of problems, determining necessary materials and tools, and carrying out repair procedures independently.
  • Training new mechanics or supervising helpers, and assisting with duties throughout the facility.
  • Working with limited supervision on moderate to complex repair activities.
  • Using electrical test devices, troubleshooting and repairing chiller electrical control circuits.
  • Independently overhauling small reciprocal compressors and overhauling larger compressors under technical supervision.
  • Checking and calibrating electrical, pneumatic, and electronic control systems.
  • Troubleshooting control circuits and replacing faulty thermostats, wiring, and control devices.
  • Performing preventive maintenance on air-conditioning and air handling equipment.
  • Logging operational characteristics of chillers according to preset schedules.
  • Installing air-conditioning units.
  • Building and installing ductwork and chilled water piping.
  • Adjusting chillers and balancing distribution systems for maximum energy efficiency.
  • Removing and replacing joints or lengths of pipe in chilled water distribution systems.
  • Assisting in troubleshooting/repairing fire alarm systems.
