About The Position

Supervises and directs a crew of Steamfitters, Stationary Engineers, and HVAC Technicians in the repair, replacement, maintenance, and installation of all types of heating, ventilating, and air conditioning equipment and controls in all City-owned facilities.

Requirements

  • Must submit or show proof of all general application requirements at the time of application.
  • Must be or become residents of the City of Pittsburgh prior to employment and remain a resident throughout employment.
  • A current, valid Pennsylvania Class C Driver's License is required prior to appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Seven (7) years of full-time experience as an HVAC Technician or similar, with at least two (2) of those years being in a supervisory role, OR a journeyman license and five (5) years of full-time experience as an HVAC Technician or similar, with at least two of those years being in a supervisory role.
  • High school diploma or GED Equivalency.

Responsibilities

  • Directs and supervises the repair and routine maintenance of heating, air conditioning, and ventilating systems (i.e., furnaces, boilers, heating pipes, refrigeration units, air conditioning units, direct digital control systems, etc.).
  • Procures and oversees professional and volunteer care and maintenance services.
  • Ensures that work is performed in accordance with established City and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Ensures project compliance, including budget and applicable codes, laws, regulations, rules, standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Coordinates the installation of new or replacement heating, air conditioning, and ventilation systems in City-owned facilities.
  • Develops and deploys communications and supporting documents necessary to present project information and gather public feedback.
  • Meets with contractors regarding work; coordinates work with other trades.
  • Provides information for and participates in the development of grant applications, conservation easements, Requests for Proposals (RFPs), bid packages, and other related materials for design, engineering, construction, restoration, and other related sources.
  • Determines priorities for jobs; assigns daily work to crews.
  • Attends required staff, committee, and board meetings, prepares reports, meeting minutes, and agendas as needed or required.
  • Supervises assigned personnel; evaluates work; recommends and implements approved disciplinary and/or corrective action; provides training and/or technical assistance as requested or required.
  • Drives a City vehicle as required.
  • Uses a variety of technological hardware (i.e., computers, laptops, tablets, smartphones, GPS, cameras, etc.) and/or software (i.e., email, Cartegraph, Microsoft Office, etc.) to maintain records (i.e., time sheets, job progress, and materials and resources used) and prepares accurate reports on work performed.
  • Stocks, locates, and requisitions equipment, parts, and supplies.
  • Plans, develops, directs, coordinates, organizes, and controls the materials, equipment, and personnel under area of management toward the effective, efficient, and economical attainment of program and departmental goals, including maximum convenience to the public and safety of employees.
  • Remains on-call 24 hours and responds to emergencies.
  • Performs activities, tasks, duties, and functions of related personnel as assigned or required.

Benefits

  • Salary: $73,632 per year.
  • This position is included in the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Union, Local 2037 and will be filled in accordance with the provisions of the Memorandum of Understanding.
