About The Position

Glenmont Job Corps Center is urgently seeking an experienced HVAC professional to join our Education & Training Team as an HVAC Instructor. You'll use your industry experience to teach young adults the technical skills, safety practices, professionalism, and problem-solving abilities they need to begin successful careers in HVAC. This position combines classroom instruction with hands-on shop training and helps prepare students for entry-level employment, advanced training, and industry-recognized certifications such as EPA Section 608 and NCCER. Think of this role as part HVAC instructor, part hands-on trainer, part mentor, and part career coach.

Requirements

  • A minimum of one-year experience in teaching or related field required.
  • Certified, licensed, or accredited in the state in which the center is located, or is accredited by a professional trade organization.
  • For NTC, instructor must be certified by union or trade organization, or by a national trade certifying organization.
  • Must possess a valid Drivers License and meet company insurability requirements.
  • Physical requirements include sitting, standing, climbing, walking, lifting, pulling and/or pushing, carrying, reaching, stooping and crouching.
  • Demonstrates the ability to lift 40 pounds and/or the ability to assess the lift load in order to ask for necessary assistance. (Depending upon trade)
  • Strong hands-on HVAC experience.
  • Understands HVAC installation, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting.
  • Can explain technical concepts in understandable language.
  • Enjoys training apprentices or newer technicians.
  • Takes workplace safety seriously.
  • Is patient when someone doesn't understand something the first time.
  • Can provide constructive feedback.
  • Is comfortable working with young adults.
  • Can balance encouragement with accountability.
  • Is organized and comfortable maintaining documentation.
  • Understands what employers expect from entry-level HVAC technicians.
  • Wants to use years of trade experience in a different way.
  • Is ready to help prepare the next generation of skilled trades professionals.

Responsibilities

  • Teach young adults the technical skills, safety practices, professionalism, and problem-solving abilities they need to begin successful careers in HVAC.
  • Combine classroom instruction with hands-on shop training.
  • Prepare students for entry-level employment, advanced training, and industry-recognized certifications such as EPA Section 608 and NCCER.
  • Provide students with industry-recognized Career Technical Training designed to prepare them for full-time employment, higher education, apprenticeships, or advanced training opportunities.
  • Combine classroom instruction with demonstrations, practical exercises, troubleshooting scenarios, and hands-on skills training.
  • Cover areas such as heating systems, air-conditioning systems, ventilation and airflow, basic HVAC electrical concepts, HVAC tools and equipment, measurements and system components, refrigeration fundamentals, troubleshooting and diagnostics, preventative maintenance, workplace and job-site safety, proper procedures and documentation, and refrigerant handling and environmental requirements.
  • Help students understand that being an HVAC professional isn't simply about knowing how to fix equipment, but about diagnosing problems, working safely, communicating professionally, and doing quality work.
  • Help prepare students for applicable industry credentials, including EPA Section 608 Certification and NCCER.
  • Monitor student progress and provide additional instruction or coaching when students need extra support.
  • Help students develop professional habits such as showing up on time, dressing appropriately for the workplace, following safety procedures, taking care of tools and equipment, maintaining an organized work area, working as part of a team, communicating professionally, following instructions and procedures, troubleshooting before giving up, completing work correctly and on time, and accepting feedback and improving their skills.
  • Monitor student progress.
  • Identify students who need additional support.
  • Maintain accurate training and progress documentation.
  • Help students reach program completion requirements.
  • Share employment opportunities and job leads.
  • Support career placement efforts.
  • Encourage advanced education or additional training.
  • Work with students individually when needed to help identify what's preventing them from progressing and determine what support may help them move forward.
  • Maintain a classroom and training environment that is organized, safe, professional, engaging, and conducive to hands-on learning.
  • Establish clear expectations and hold students accountable for attendance, participation, safety, dress code, behavior, professionalism, and care of equipment.
  • Provide students with guidance, coaching, accountability, and encouragement while maintaining professional expectations.
  • Model Job Corps Career Success Standards and help students develop behaviors that support long-term employment and independence.
  • Work with staff across departments such as Academics, Counseling, Residential Living, Career Transition Services, Health & Wellness, Safety & Security, and other Education & Training programs.
  • Communicate with other departments to help ensure students receive appropriate supervision, services, and support.
  • Maintain accurate student training and progress information.
  • Support required program and performance reporting.
  • Protect confidential student information.
  • Follow Job Corps, DOL, Company, and Center procedures.
  • Complete assignments and documentation accurately and on time.
  • Follow all integrity requirements and ensure student data is never manipulated.
