About The Position

VCU’s Facilities Management Department is seeking to hire an HVAC Apprentice for Facilities Operations. The HVAC Apprentice assists with reactive and preventive maintenance across the Zone 200 and 300 facilities while concurrently attending required off-site classes. Additionally, this position is designated as essential personnel, requiring response during emergencies and inclement weather events. The HVAC Apprentice assists the Trades Specialist with the completion of preventive maintenance, repairs and replacement of HVAC components and systems; provides exemplary customer service to all faculty, staff and students supporting the University’s mission of teaching, high-impact research and creative expression; identifies and documents system deficiencies using diagnostic tools and advise management of tasks requiring priority attention; and provides quality workmanship and service to maximize system availability and minimize unscheduled downtime.

Requirements

  • Ability to learn basic mechanical and electrical principles
  • Ability to follow instructions
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing to supervision, other employees and customers
  • Ability to use a variety of hand tools and power equipment
  • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • Virginia Driver’s License required
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Trades Specialist with service requests requiring diagnosis and repair of HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems utilizing experience and general building knowledge
  • Performs and completes unskilled and semi-skilled scheduled preventive maintenance tasks on fan coil units, air handling units, roof top equipment, exhaust fans, chillers, pumps, cooling towers and other HVAC related systems/components.
  • Advise supervision and or management by recommending equipment maintenance tasks and identifying equipment needing priority attention
  • Communicate orally and in writing with building occupants and supervision regarding work schedules, system problems, estimated completion times and effects of system problems on occupant safety and comfort
  • Maintain records of equipment service and repairs
  • Attend scheduled progress meetings with HVAC mentor.
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Work/on-call during inclement weather and emergencies
  • Clean and organize materials in Zone shop and mechanical areas
  • Participates in periodic cleaning of Zone shop
