HVAC and Plumbing Service Manager

About The Position

D.C. Goodman & Sons is a full-service mechanical contractor specializing in the sale, installation, and service of mechanical, heating, plumbing, electrical, and sprinkler systems for commercial and institutional clients. We're hiring a Service Manager to build and lead our HVAC/Plumbing service department from the ground up. This role owns the service side of the business end to end — but since no formal preventive maintenance program currently exists, a core part of the job is developing that scope from scratch: PM schedules, service agreements, documentation standards, and department processes. Expect a hands-on start: you'll likely be running service calls and technical work directly alongside (or ahead of) the team while the department is being built out, transitioning into a more traditional management role as staffing and processes mature. The ideal candidate has come up through the trades, knows commercial HVAC and plumbing systems firsthand, and wants the opportunity to shape a department rather than step into one that's already established.

Requirements

  • 7-10+ years of hands-on commercial HVAC and/or plumbing experience, including significant time in a lead technician, foreman, or supervisory capacity
  • Comfort operating in a build-out environment — willing to do the hands-on technical work personally before there's a full team or established PM program in place
  • Strong working knowledge of commercial mechanical systems, blueprints, and specs
  • OSHA 30 certification
  • Valid driver's license
  • Comfortable being the escalation point for after-hours emergency issues

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience standing up a service line, PM program, or department from scratch
  • Prior experience managing service contracts, PM agreements, or client accounts directly
  • Experience with dispatch/scheduling software and job costing
  • Backflow prevention certification
  • Experience coordinating multi-trade job sites (electrical, sheet metal, fire protection)

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a preventive maintenance program for HVAC and plumbing systems from the ground up, including PM schedules, service agreement structure, documentation standards, and pricing, since no formal program currently exists
  • Manage day-to-day operations of the service department, including scheduling, dispatch, and prioritization of preventive maintenance visits, service calls, and emergency response as the program is built out
  • Expect to personally perform service, diagnostics, and repair work in the early stages of the role, particularly before the department has full technician capacity
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop a team of HVAC/Plumbing Technicians as the department grows, including hiring, performance management, and training on commercial systems and safety practices
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for facility managers and clients on service accounts, ensuring response times, work quality, and communication meet expectations
  • Review technician diagnostics and repair plans on complex commercial equipment (rooftop units, boilers, chillers, VAV systems, backflow prevention systems) and provide technical guidance when issues escalate
  • Build and maintain preventive maintenance agreements and service contracts; identify opportunities to expand service scope with existing clients
  • Own service department financials: labor allocation, job costing, invoicing accuracy, and department profitability
  • Establish and enforce on-call rotation for after-hours emergency service coverage
  • Ensure compliance with permitting, licensing, and safety requirements (OSHA, local/municipal codes) across all service work
  • Coordinate with other department leads (installation, electrical, fire protection) on multi-trade jobs and shared clients
  • Track and report on key service metrics (response time, first-time fix rate, technician utilization, customer satisfaction) once the program is established
