About The Position

The Electrical Engineer will lead the end-to-end technical execution of high-voltage (HV) and medium-voltage (MV) systems across utility-scale solar and battery energy storage projects. This role owns critical engineering decisions spanning utility interconnection, substation and transmission design optimization, and MV collection system performance—from early-stage development through financing, construction, commissioning, and into operations. The role requires a strong balance of high voltage substation & collection system design, power system studies, field-level equipment understanding, and real-world troubleshooting experience, including testing. You will be expected to diagnose and resolve issues across protection systems, transformers, breakers, cables, and substation control systems. Beyond project delivery, you will lead root-cause analysis of system events and drive targeted upgrade and retrofit initiatives to improve fleet reliability, availability, and compliance.

Requirements

  • Minimum 8+ years of experience leading technical scope for HV substations (345kV–500kV) and MV collection systems (up to 34.5kV) within an IPP, EPC, or engineering firm.
  • Proven experience managing EPCs, consultants, vendors, and cross-functional teams through project lifecycle execution.
  • Ability to independently diagnose and resolve plant and substation issues using relay data, SCADA, inverter logs, plant historian and equipment diagnostics, and drive fixes through to implementation.
  • Direct working knowledge of major power system equipment, including operation, failure modes, and troubleshooting: Transformers (GSU/MVT/Aux): thermal limits, DGA, OLTC/LTC, through-fault vs internal fault
  • Breakers & Switchgear (SF₆/Vacuum): timing, control circuits, insulation/gas issues
  • Protection Systems: line/differential/feeder schemes, settings, CT/VT behavior, misoperations
  • MV Cables & Grounding: insulation/termination failures, grounding schemes, fault response and location
  • PV/BESS Inverters: trip behavior, PPC controls (PF, voltage control), weak grid interactions
  • SCADA/Metering/Comms: telemetry, time sync (GPS/PTP), DNP3/Modbus, metering configurations
  • Strong working knowledge of NERC PRC & MOD standards and regional requirements (CAISO, ERCOT) related to plant operation and compliance.
  • Deep understanding of HV/MV equipment, protection and control schemes, metering, substation SCADA, and design trade-offs (technical vs cost vs schedule).
  • Solid foundation in power system studies and modeling.
  • Proficiency with steady-state modeling tools (ETAP, SKM, DIgSILENT, or similar).
  • Advanced Excel skills for technical and financial analysis.
  • Working knowledge of PSSE, PowerWorld, and PSCAD.
  • Familiarity with NEC, NESC, IEEE standards.
  • Bachelors in Electrical Engineering

Nice To Haves

  • PE license preferred.
  • Masters or PhD is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design and technical review of HV substations (115kV–500kV), transmission interconnections, and MV collection systems (34.5kV–480V).
  • Direct EPCs, Engineers of Record, and consultants to optimize design, reduce execution risk, and maintain schedule and cost targets.
  • Own utility interconnection scope, including review of applications, steady-state and dynamic models, and technical negotiations with ISOs/utilities (e.g., CAISO, ERCOT).
  • Lead field-informed troubleshooting of system events, including relay operations, misoperations, nuisance trips, and equipment failures.
  • Perform root-cause analysis using relay event reports, oscillography, Substation SCADA data, and equipment diagnostics (e.g., DGA, infrared, insulation testing).
  • Define and implement upgrade and retrofit projects, including protection setting changes, control system tuning, equipment replacement, and design corrections to improve reliability and performance.
  • Provide NERC and regional regulatory (CAISO/ERCOT) compliance support, ensuring operational readiness and adherence to PRC and related standards.
  • Support Operations with ongoing technical issue resolution and performance optimization across the fleet.
  • Develop and maintain engineering standards, technical specifications, EPC exhibits, and testing protocols.
  • Witness and evaluate FAT/SAT, commissioning, and energization activities.
  • Support EPC RFPs and supply agreements by defining enforceable technical requirements.
  • Contribute to Independent Engineer (IE) diligence and project financing.
  • Drive cross-functional coordination to resolve permitting, regulatory, and technical constraints.
