About The Position

Under general supervision, the Humane Services Officer performs routine duties related to the upkeep of animals and the animal shelter. This position is a tentative “At-Will” appointment and subject to a probationary period of six (6) months from the date of hire. Upon successful completion of a probationary period, a non-management employee shall be granted regular status in the classification in which the probationary period is served. Essential duties and responsibilities include receiving stray, roaming, trapped, and relinquished animals; humanely capturing and handling animals; ensuring all impounded animals are scanned for owner identifiers. The role also involves investigating reports of animal bites, checking animal records for current rabies vaccinations, and impounding unvaccinated biting animals. Additionally, the officer will deliver, set, retrieve, and impound animals in traps, vaccinate all animals upon intake, and document medications used and treatments given. The position requires administering first aid to injured animals, transferring animals to veterinary hospitals or laboratories, and performing humane euthanasia in accordance with established policies and procedures. Responsibilities extend to picking up and disposing of dead animals on City streets, participating in the maintenance of the Animal Control Center (washing floors, cleaning dishes, disinfecting kennels, emptying litter boxes, cleaning bathrooms and offices), and providing care and health evaluations for animals (feeding, watering, treating minor injuries, administering medications, observing for disease indicators). The officer must perform all work duties and activities in accordance with City and shelter policies, procedures, and safety practices, and input data and maintain records related to animal intake and disposition, adoptions, licensing, medical care, and vaccinations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent AND some previous experience caring for animals; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Must possess a State of Arizona valid driver’s license.
  • Must be certified to administer humane euthanasia or obtain certification upon hire.
  • Knowledge of applicable local, State, and Federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Knowledge of ordinances, laws and regulations governing the licensing, impounding, care, release, destruction, and disposal of animals.
  • Knowledge of established standards, methods, procedures, and equipment used in the capture, impounding, care handling, and treatment of animals.
  • Knowledge of animal habits and characteristics of various breeds of animal and reptiles.
  • Knowledge of common animal diseases and related symptoms.
  • Knowledge of work safety policies, procedures, practices, and equipment.
  • Skill in interacting tactfully and professionally with City staff, outside agencies, and the public.
  • Skill in preparing clear and concise reports.
  • Skill in identifying abnormal animal behaviors and symptoms of disease.
  • Skill in handling and caring for animals in a humane manner.
  • Skill in maintaining accurate records, logs, and technical documents.
  • Skill in following written and verbal instructions.
  • Skill in establishing and effective working relationships.
  • Skill in communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.

Responsibilities

  • Inputs data and maintains records related to animal intake and disposition, adoptions, licensing, medical care and vaccinations administered.
  • Performs related duties as assigned or required.
