We’re a high-save organization helping nearly 34,000 animals in our community each year and caring for approximately 10,000 across both of our campuses. through sheltering, adoptions and community-centered programs and services that help find pets loving homes and keep them there. Requirements

  • 18 years of age or older.
  • High School graduate (or equivalent).
  • Must reside within a reasonable distance of the shelter to allow response to emergency call-outs within 30 minutes, as required to meet contractual obligations.
  • Fear Free Certified prior to fieldwork.
  • Attain and maintain NACA I certification.
  • Euthanasia certified within one year of hire.
  • 2+ years’ experience working with animals of unknown dispositions.
  • Must be goal-oriented, self-starter with willingness and maturity to go beyond prescribed work and time schedules and meet assigned deadlines.
  • Ability to work autonomously, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines efficiently.
  • Staying updated on community developments, particularly in animal welfare.
  • High degree of accuracy and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and observational skills.
  • Self-starter with a goal-oriented mindset, willing to exceed prescribed work and time schedules to meet deadlines.
  • Possession of a valid Driver’s License with valid registration and insurance for personal vehicles, essential for positions requiring driving.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the welfare of animals and alignment with the mission of the NHS.
  • Consistently treat animals with compassion and respect, both professionally and personally, and promote these values to others.
  • Strict adherence to all local regulations concerning the ownership and care of personal animals.
  • Comprehensive understanding of pet behavior and care, with the capability to handle various animals safely and responsibly.
  • Maintaining a consistently positive and professional demeanor is essential.
  • A sincere interest in the NHS’s mission and vision.

Nice To Haves

  • College degree in Criminal Justice, Animal Science, Public Administration, Emergency Management, or another related field. is a plus.
  • Volunteering or working in animal control, or animal welfare, agencies are a plus.
  • Experience in same or related position in a nonprofit setting-preferably animal welfare.
  • Record of continually increasing responsibilities with measurable results.
  • College degree.
  • Experience in a nonprofit agency.
  • Animal welfare experience.

Responsibilities

  • Support contracted Carson City service commitments by delivering professional animal control services and coordinating with partner agencies to ensure consistent, timely response and outcomes.
  • Conduct routine patrols on foot or in a company vehicle within assigned areas to locate animals at large; safely capture, control, transport and deliver animals to NHS for impoundment.
  • Respond to high-priority and complex calls for service including aggressive animal incidents, animal cruelty investigations, bite reports, law enforcement assistance requests, and take appropriate enforcement and safety actions.
  • Communicate professionally and compassionately with the public to provide education, warnings, and guidance regarding Animal Control ordinances; collaborate with local law enforcement to issue citations when necessary to resolve complaints and ensure compliance with laws and regulations
  • Prepare complete and accurate case documentation and testify in court regarding enforcement actions, investigations and related incidents.
  • Maintain working knowledge of applicable Animal Control Ordinances and enforcement practices; remain informed of ordinance updates and procedural changes.
  • Perform animal rescues and respond to emergency calls while following safe handling practices and established protocols.
  • Under the direction and supervision of a shelter Veterinarian, safely perform emergency euthanasia when required and in accordance with policy and applicable regulations.
  • Remove and transport dead animals for disposal in compliance with established protocols.
  • Maintain accurate and timely and complete data entry of case reports, citations, impounds, and field activities using required systems and documentation standards.
  • Safely operate, ensure proper working condition and cleanliness of dispatch vehicle. Report mechanical or safety concerns promptly to the proper staff members.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with law enforcement, rescue groups, veterinarians, and other agencies to support coordinated field operations and animal welfare outcomes.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of privileged communications and information and complies with privacy laws, regulations and organizational polices.
  • Investigate animal cruelty and abuse. Including evidence collection, documentation, and coordination with appropriate agencies as needed.
  • Work assigned schedules, on-call schedules, additional schedules to provide coverage for high volume caseloads, and to ensure coverage for contractual obligations as needed based on department and company needs.
  • Helps promote fundraising activities and solicit support of agency overall.
  • Interacts with co-workers and volunteers in an efficient and courteous manner to ensure a cooperative team environment amongst all departments.
  • Maintain and promote a positive public image relevant to NHS standards.
  • Represents NHS, professionally with customers, donors, and business partners.
  • Attend and participate in departmental and shelter meetings.
  • Attend educational conferences/seminars as recommended/approved.
  • In the event of an emergency, assist with the handling and evacuation of animals located at any NHS campus.
  • Participate in disaster preparedness and response activities for the organization and community as it pertains to pet related needs.
  • Address and/or report any safety hazards or unsafe activities.
  • Perform other responsibilities as requested by direct management, and/or the CEO.
