About The Position

The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects the public by preparing court-involved youth to be successful citizens. DJJ is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth, strengthening both families and communities within the Commonwealth. DJJ is currently hiring a Human Rights Coordinator. This position will support the agency’s efforts through constant monitoring of conditions of confinement in the agency’s correctional centers, including compliance with the resident discipline and grievance process; attending Resident Advisory Council meetings; tracking and maintaining issues related to behaviors and facility violations with the database; monitoring the Ombudsman Reporting Line; monitoring implementation of agency procedures and initiatives as needed.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations pertaining to rights of incarcerated individuals.
  • Ability to work with at risk and court involved youth.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Proficiency in using automated systems and computer software sufficient to effectively track multiple projects and activities.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to organize, track, and prioritize work effectively and appropriately.
  • Ability to conduct staff and resident training.

Nice To Haves

  • Relevant experience in the areas of human services and client rights.
  • Experience in the juvenile justice system, preferably including direct contact with youth.
  • Significant data entry experience and compliance and audit experience.
  • Training, education, and/or relevant experience in social work, criminal justice, or a related field, and advocacy.
