About The Position

This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Human Resources Management (HRM), CBP Hiring Center. The role supports CBP's hiring mission by classifying General Schedule and Federal Wage System positions, reviewing position descriptions, conducting desk audits, maintaining position data, and assisting with position management. The salary ranges from $55,012.00 to $87,482.00, with promotion potential to $126,859.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered with Selective Service.
  • Primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years.
  • All pre-employment processes will be conducted in English.
  • May be required to pass a background investigation.
  • Must adhere to the DHS Drug-Free Workplace Plan.
  • Must adhere to government ethics standards, including obtaining approval for outside employment or business activity.
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States as confirmed by E-Verify.
  • 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-06) performing duties such as: Conducting research from various sources to compile and consolidate information. Gathering and analyzing basic facts for classification actions. Communicating factual and procedural information clearly to customers.
  • OR Education Substitution for GS-07: Successful completion of one year of full-time graduate education from an accredited college or university may substitute for the experience required at this level. This education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.
  • OR Superior Academic Achievement (SAA) may also substitute for the experience required. It is based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average (i.e., GPA 3.0 or higher of a possible 4.0, excluding pass/fail credits. Pass/fail credits cannot be more than 10% of total credits), or (3) honor society membership.
  • 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-08) performing duties such as: Assisting higher graded specialists with conducting desk audits. Reviewing management requests for classification actions. Interpreting and applying position classification standards to positions to determine the correct pay category, occupational series, title, and grade level. Preparing evaluation reports and discussing findings with management and employees.
  • OR Education Substitution for GS-09: A master's degree or equivalent graduate degree, 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree, a J.D. or an LL.B. degree from an accredited college or university may substitute for experience required at this level. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.
  • Combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements for the grade levels specified.

Responsibilities

  • Classifying position descriptions using Office of Personnel Management (OPM) classification standards by making determinations on the proper pay plan, title, series and grade level for General Schedule (GS) positions.
  • Assisting higher graded specialists, interpreting classification issuances, directives, regulations, laws and procedures.
  • Developing how to prepare evaluation reports of findings.
  • Assisting higher graded specialists, making auxiliary determinations that rarely would result in controversy to classified positions.
  • Receiving on the job training on several human resources software programs to assess information, record and enter data on positions.
