About The Position

The Fulton County Sheriff's Office is seeking a Human Resources Generalist to support the Sheriff’s Office by performing a wide range of professional HR duties. This role is crucial for effective personnel management, ensuring compliance with federal and state employment laws, and aligning with agency policies and procedures. The HR Generalist will act as a resource for employees and supervisors, assist with recruitment and retention efforts, manage sensitive personnel matters, and contribute to a positive and accountable workplace culture.

Requirements

  • 2–5 years of professional HR experience
  • Professional HR Certification strongly preferred.
  • Experience with recruitment, employee development, and HR compliance required.
  • Strong understanding of employment law, HR best practices, and public-sector HR processes.
  • Familiarity with public safety hiring standards, POST requirements, and background investigations.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive matters with discretion.
  • Proficiency in HRIS systems, Microsoft Office, and applicant tracking platforms.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate full-cycle recruitment for sworn, detention, and civilian positions, including job postings, applicant screening, interview scheduling, and background documentation collection.
  • Maintain applicant tracking systems and ensure timely communication with candidates.
  • Participate in job fairs, community outreach events, and departmental recruitment initiatives.
  • Facilitate new-hire onboarding, ensuring completion of all required documentation, credential verification, and policy acknowledgments.
  • Conduct HR orientation sessions covering benefits, workplace expectations, ethics, and Sheriff’s Office procedures.
  • Assist supervisors with corrective action processes, documentation, and performance improvement plans.
  • Ensure confidentiality and adherence to legal and departmental standards.
  • Promote positive employee engagement through communication, recognition programs, and wellness initiatives.
  • Ensure HR practices comply with federal and state employment laws (FLSA, FMLA, ADA, EEOC, HIPAA) and local civil service rules.
  • Maintain knowledge of law-enforcement-specific regulations, including POST standards, detention staffing mandates, and background check requirements.
  • Assist with policy updates, distribution, and training related to HR and workplace conduct.
  • Maintain accurate and secure personnel files in accordance with retention laws and agency policy.
  • Guide employees through enrollment, qualifying life events, and benefits questions.
  • Manage leave programs such as FMLA, military leave, workers’ compensation, and workplace accommodations.
  • Coordinate with risk management on injury claims and return-to-work processes.
  • Assist with payroll processing, timekeeping audits, and corrections for sworn and professional staff.
  • Maintain employee data in HRIS systems, ensuring accuracy in job classifications, pay grades, certifications, and assignments.
  • Coordinate employee training sessions related to HR topics.
  • Support career development initiatives.
  • Prepare HR reports, metrics, and dashboards related to staffing, turnover, overtime, demographics, and compliance.
  • Assist with audits, accreditation processes, and data requests from command staff or external agencies.
  • Maintain confidentiality and ensure secure handling of sensitive information.
  • Perform customer service functions in person, by telephone or by email; provide information and assistance regarding department services, forms or other issues; respond to routine questions, complaints, or requests for service; initiate problem resolution.
  • Advise departmental supervisors regarding human resource practices and issues; prepare and recommend personnel policies; draft and/or revise personnel policies and procedures; resolve and recommend solutions to sensitive human resources issues.
  • Read, assimilate and disseminate information on changes in laws and regulations; analyze impact of changes on department policies and procedures; recommend compliance processes or procedures; respond to internal and external requests for information regarding local, state and federal personnel laws and ordinances.
  • Conduct training classes for employees within the department pertaining to policy and procedures and ensure compliance; facilitate/conduct orientation sessions and training sessions for interpersonal skills and basic office skills; respond to internal and external requests for staff assistance, instruction, information, guidance, policy interpretation, etc.
  • Maintain guidelines for personnel transactions, such as hires, promotions, transfers, performance reviews and terminations; recruit and select personnel; prepare and publish advertisements for available jobs; prepare, analyze and revise job descriptions; conduct screenings, interviews, background and reference checks; schedule physicals and drug screenings; make hiring and firing recommendations; maintain related documentation.
  • Evaluate benefit program usage and premium costs, terms, renewals and modification of contracts; develop recommendations and requests for proposal for new benefits plans; implement annual benefits meetings and enrollments; notify employees of benefit program changes.
  • Assist in administering worker's compensation programs, contracts and reporting; assist injured employees and care providers through service and payment process; calculate billing; notify employees of plan changes and processes.
  • Research, compile, and/or monitor administrative, statistical or other data pertaining to department operations; summarize data, perform routine data analysis, and prepare reports; conduct research of department files, database records, electronic data sources, Internet sites, hardcopy materials, or other sources as needed.
  • Maintain a variety of confidential files and information, including drug test results for other departments; retain, store, or destroy files as required.
  • Process a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated timeframes and per established procedures: receive and review various documentation, including applications, employee information and data, and policies and procedures; review, complete, process, forward or retain as appropriate; prepare or complete various forms, reports, correspondence, and other documentation, including policies, procedures, and spreadsheets; compile data for further processing or for use in preparation of department reports; and maintain computerized and/or hardcopy records.
  • Operate a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data, utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation, Internet, e-mail, or other software; and operate general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.
  • Communicate with supervisor, other employees, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
