About The Position

The Human Landing System (HLS) Engineer- APS Systems will work in a highly integrated team performing technical and integration activities to support APS system development and certification. The role involves providing technical insight and leading risk mitigation efforts for propulsion systems, identifying technical and programmatic risks, and ensuring alignment with NASA safety, mission assurance, and flight readiness objectives. The engineer will also lead systems engineering efforts for thruster integration, coordinate across multidisciplinary teams, and develop models and analysis tools. This position requires attending technical interchanges, design reviews, and other meetings to maintain knowledge of design, requirements, and issues. The engineer will perform system assessments, identify issues, pursue resolutions, and document findings for engineering review boards. Evaluating vehicle changes for impacts to propulsion elements and vehicle integration, as well as performing verification and validation reviews for propulsion components, subsystems, and the integrated vehicle, are also key responsibilities. The role requires performing analysis and providing systems engineering skills to support various program engineering and integration efforts.

Requirements

  • Degree in Engineering or related discipline required; Engineering degree from an ABET accredited university preferred.
  • Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a minimum of a Masters with at least 18 years of experience, or BS with at least 20 years of experience.
  • Experience with liquid propulsion system design, analysis, integration or development/verification testing.
  • Experience with APS systems, including thrusters and RCS.
  • Experience with fluid/gas systems modeling.
  • Capability to plan and perform systems engineering and analysis tasks independently and as a team.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products such as Power-Point, Excel, and Word.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Individual must be highly motivated, flexible and willing to shift focus areas to meet volatile customer requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Follow and understand the HLS partner Systems Engineering approach to design, development, integration and test.
  • Data analysis and anomaly resolution as needed.
  • Review and provide assessments of HLS provider deliverables (such as milestone products, hazards, verifications, risks, and test reports).
  • Support of the Human Lander program through technical insight by providing reviews and risk assessment and recommendations on NASA-partner engine systems and vehicle propulsion system design and development.
  • Provide systems insight and lead risk mitigation efforts for Artemis III through Artemis V propulsion systems, identifying technical and programmatic risks and ensuring alignment with NASA safety, mission assurance, and flight readiness objectives.
  • Lead systems engineering efforts for thruster integration, coordinating across multidisciplinary teams to ensure propulsion system requirements, interface control, and verification objectives are met in support of mission success.
  • Develop models and analysis tools, provide analytical documentation such as trade studies, hazards assessments, fault tolerance designs, certifications for flight, launch vehicle data reviews.
  • Provide insight and recommendations for subsystem and in-space environment model fidelity.
  • Evaluate performance of system models in ground and flight operations.
  • Attend technical interchange, project planning, design review and other appropriate meetings to maintain a current knowledge base of design, requirements, issues, action items, and resolution activities.
  • Perform system assessments, identify issues, pursue resolutions, document and present to engineering review board with rationale and recommendations.
