Patients First | Innovation | Winning Culture | Heart Recovery POSITION SUMMARY: Our Human Factors Engineers and Designers are focused on rapidly developing next generation products for heart failure by placing our users at the center of our design process. We design solutions that balance the needs of various users; surgeons, hospital staff, patients and caregivers. Our team works across all Abiomed platforms striving for best practice usability and true human centered design.

Requirements

  • BS/BA in Human Factors Engineering, Usability, Cognitive Science, Anthropology, or related field; MS is a plus.
  • Preferred experience in HF/usability engineering, use‑case testing, or product development.
  • Knowledge of ethnographic research, formative/summative testing, and design control documentation.
  • Understanding of HF principles, task analysis, and use‑related risk assessment.
  • Familiarity with UX/UI concepts, human perception, cognition, and workload analysis is a plus.
  • Basic knowledge of anthropometrics, biomechanics, and physiology preferred.
  • Ability to turn user feedback into clear, actionable insights.
  • Experience investigating use‑related issues and performing root‑cause analysis preferred.
  • Familiarity with FDA, ISO, AAMI, and other relevant usability standards preferred.
  • Permanently authorized to work in the U.S., must not require sponsorship of an employment visa (e.g., H-1B or green card) at the time of application or in the future.
  • Students currently on CPT, OPT, or STEM OPT usually requires future sponsorship for long term employment and do not meet the requirements for this program unless eligible for an alternative long-term status that does not require company sponsorship.

Responsibilities

  • Support HF/Usability strategy across the product lifecycle—from concept to post‑market—through hands-on usability activities.
  • Learn user needs and use environments through direct user interaction and research; contribute to evaluations that influence product and business decisions.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams, share the voice of the customer, and help guide human‑centered design decisions.
  • Work closely with product development teams to run usability studies, document findings, and seek mentorship to grow in Human Factors and medical device development.
