About The Position

The Center for Global Health, within the Department of Internal Medicine is seeking a HS Research Tech 1. The HS Research Technician 1 supports field and laboratory activities for the New Mexico Department of Health Mosquito Surveillance Project. Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, this position assists with the preparation, deployment, and maintenance of mosquito surveillance equipment; conducts field surveillance and specimen collection at regional partner sites; receives and processes mosquito specimens; performs mosquito species identification and laboratory sample preparation; assists with molecular screening for mosquito-borne pathogens; maintains project records and inventory; and collaborates with faculty, laboratory personnel, and public health partners to support statewide mosquito surveillance and grant deliverables. The Department of Internal Medicine is a large, progressive department with a diverse staff working in dedicated teams to provide quality work in an organized, effective, and efficient manner through innovation, training, and education. Through our collaborative work effort, we support the faculty and enhance the missions of the department, school, Health Sciences Center, and University.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • At least 1 year of directly related student practicum or equivalent experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified
  • Valid NM driver's license and valid UNM driver's permit will be required (if driving is a job requirement)
  • Must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check
  • Annual TB testing may be required if working in a patient care area

Nice To Haves

  • Experience performing laboratory techniques, specimen processing, or molecular biology procedures in a research or public health laboratory
  • Experience conducting field-based biological or environmental sampling, including travel to field sites and working outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Knowledge of mosquito biology, vector surveillance, entomology, or infectious disease/public health surveillance
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate records, follow standard operating procedures, work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, and communicate effectively with research collaborators and community partners
