About The Position

The University of New Mexico's Department of Emergency Medicine is seeking On-Call Research Assistants to support medical research studies conducted within the emergency care setting. This part-time, on-call position averages no more than 10 hours per week, with work hours determined by study enrollment needs. Shifts may include evenings, nights, and weekends. Under the direction of a Research Manager or Research Coordinator, the Research Assistant will support multiple aspects of human subjects research. Responsibilities include identifying and screening potential study participants, interacting with patients and families, obtaining and documenting informed consent, collecting research data through patient interaction and electronic medical records, conducting follow-up communications, and assisting with study coordination activities. The position also involves handling biological specimens and supporting basic laboratory processing in accordance with approved protocols. Successful candidates will demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills, attention to detail, and sound critical thinking abilities. Research Assistants are expected to work collaboratively as part of a larger research team while maintaining strict compliance with HIPAA regulations, FDA requirements, and Good Clinical Practice guidelines. All duties are performed using appropriate personal protective equipment in a fast-paced hospital environment that prioritizes patient safety, data integrity, and ethical research conduct.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • No previous experience required
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis
  • Strict compliance with HIPAA regulations, FDA requirements, and Good Clinical Practice guidelines
  • Use of appropriate personal protective equipment

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in clinical research, healthcare, or laboratory settings
  • Familiarity with electronic medical record systems (Cerner preferred)
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to follow complex protocols
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, nights, and weekends as study needs arise
  • Human subjects Protection Training and/or Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certification
  • A valid New Mexico driver's license will be required if a motor vehicle must be operated on the job
