About The Position

The HR Generalist is Truly Free's day-to-day on-site HR presence — employees' main HR point of contact after their manager, and the operational engine behind onboarding, recordkeeping, and recruiting logistics. This role reports to the Chief People Officer, with an indirect line to the Senior HR Generalist, who serves as backup coverage during this role's leave, sick days, and turnover, and partners closely with the Talent Acquisition Specialist and HR Operations Coordinator to keep HR running day to day. Someone is always at the desk, every employee question gets answered, and every new hire's paperwork and records are clean from day one.

Requirements

  • 1-2 years of HR or HR-adjacent administrative experience.
  • Comfort being the on-site, in-person point of contact for employees.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • High discretion with confidential employee information.
  • Able to work on-site at Williamsburg, MI HQ.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with an HRIS and applicant tracking system.
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in HR, Business, or related field.
  • Experience coordinating onboarding or new-hire logistics.
  • Comfortable stepping in on recruiting coordination when needed.
  • Experience with payroll timecard review/QC or payroll drafting.
  • Familiarity with OSHA respirator program requirements (fit testing, medical clearance).
  • Experience handling unemployment claims or state HR compliance requests.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as employees' main point of contact for HR matters after their manager, answering routine questions at HQ and escalating complex employee-relations or compliance issues to the Senior HR Generalist.
  • Assist department managers with scheduling, assignments, and the daily workflow of subordinate staff; support constructive, timely performance evaluations.
  • Coordinate new-hire paperwork, orientation scheduling, systems/badge setup, and first week logistics, handing off smoothly from the Recruiter for all new hires, company-wide.
  • Manage the exit process for departing employees — final paperwork, systems/access deactivation, equipment return, and exit interviews.
  • Set up timecard/timekeeping access and gym access for every new hire as part of onboarding.
  • Manage the employee lunch program and coordinate gym access/facility perks for the team.
  • Administer the day-to-day safety program — track safety training completion, maintain OSHA recordkeeping, run the respirator program (fit testing, medical clearance, recordkeeping), and promote a safe work environment; escalate serious concerns to the Senior HR Generalist.
  • Schedule and manage pre-employment physicals and exams for new hires ahead of start date.
  • Own and respond to unemployment claims and related state requests.
  • Prepare the draft payroll and review/QC employee timecards for accuracy ahead of each payroll run.
  • Maintain personnel files and enter/update HRIS data accurately and on time, under the Senior HR Generalist's compliance oversight.
  • Coordinate interview scheduling, candidate communication, and reference checks for on site position requisitions.
  • Conduct or acquire background checks and employment eligibility verifications (I-9) for new hires.
  • Support employee recognition programs and company employee engagement initiatives.
  • Schedule and coordinate delivery of the training programs developed by the Senior HR Generalist and Corporate Trainer (compliance, safety, leadership development).
  • Handle day-to-day HR correspondence, filing, and administrative tasks; support the HR Operations Coordinator as needed.
  • Field routine employment verification and reference requests.
  • Attend and document disciplinary meetings, terminations, and investigations alongside the Senior HR Generalist.
  • Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and company policy; stay current on HR trends, regulatory changes, and new HR technologies.
  • Provide high-level administrative support to the Chief People Officer and other assigned leadership, including drafting letters, memos, invoices, and reports.
  • Other duties/projects as assigned.
