About The Position

Whitman Hospital & Medical Clinics (WHMC), located in the charming rural community of Colfax, Washington—just 30 minutes from Pullman, home of Washington State University—is seeking an experienced Interim HR Director to provide leadership and support during a transitional period. This is a fully on-site role, with occasional remote flexibility. The contract is for 13 weeks, with the potential to extend or convert to permanent. The schedule is 40 hours per week (8-hour days, 5 days per week). WHMC is a Critical Access Hospital serving its community with approximately 300 employees and a dedicated HR team of 3 staff members. The HR Director will report directly to the CEO and play a key role in maintaining continuity, supporting staff, and ensuring compliance across all HR functions.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive HR leadership experience in a healthcare setting required.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and support HR teams in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong knowledge of employment law, compliance, and HR best practices.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and trust-building skills.
  • Proven ability to mentor and develop team members.

Responsibilities

  • Provide oversight of all core HR functions, including payroll, benefits, recruitment, compensation, and employee relations
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable state and federal employment laws and regulations
  • Support and guide HR team members, fostering development and continuity
  • Partner with leadership to address organizational needs and employee concerns
  • Maintain strong communication and follow-through across departments
