About The Position

The Human Resources Business Partner (HRBP) serves as a go-to resource for a portfolio of assigned departments, providing practical guidance on HR policies, procedures, and everyday employee and leadership questions. They will work closely with managers and staff to help navigate employee relations situations, including performance and disciplinary matters, and offer recommendations that support both individuals and the broader goals of the division. The HRBP also partners with the HR Associate Director on more complex cases and helps represent the division in HR meetings, while acting as the first point of contact for most HR-related needs for their portfolio. Additionally, the HRBP supports a range of HR operations and projects that keep things running smoothly. A primary area of focus for this role will be leading the student employee program within the Division for Teaching and Learning which routinely employs 450+ student hourly employees and roughly 30 graduate student employees. Routine work includes reviewing reports for accuracy and compliance, maintaining records and organizational charts, and helping track HR metrics for leadership. Overall, the HRBP helps keep HR processes organized, accessible, and aligned with the division’s goals while ensuring employees have a clear and responsive resource for support. This position is in the Division for Teaching and Learning’s administrative department. The Division is also home to the Center for Teaching, Learning and Mentoring (CTLM), High-Impact Practice Programs (HIPs), the Morgridge Center for Public Service, the Office of Academic and Career Success (OACS), Student Engagement and Scholarship Programs (SESP), Student Learning Assessment (SLA), the Wisconsin Institute for Science Education and Community Engagement (WISCIENCE), the Center for Campus History (CCH) and Indigenous Education. This position has the possibility to be converted to an ongoing appointment based on need and/or funding.

Requirements

  • Professional experience in at least 2 of the following functional areas of HR for 3 or more years: Position Management/Staffing (recruitment, crafting job descriptions, developing staffing plans), Onboarding/offboarding, Employment relations (performance/discipline management), Compensation (conducting comprehensive reviews, processing salary adjustments), Compliance (FMLA/ADA, records retention)
  • Successfully managing a high volume of varied tasks in a fast-paced environment (e.g., organizing, prioritizing, consistently meeting deadlines, managing multiple tasks).
  • Providing customer service to a range of customers (e.g., responding to inquiries, transparency, guiding customers through a transaction, follow-up / follow-through, etc.).
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and use discretion responding to confidential and sensitive matters
  • Proficient in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, email, and database applications such as the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Experience working with human resources information systems (e.g. Workday)

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of employment and related statutes, laws, and regulations
  • Experience administering FMLA and ADA
  • 5 or more years of independent professional experience in human resources
  • Experience working in higher education
  • Interpreting, applying, and communicating complex polices and/or procedures

Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements processes and procedures for one or many various HR functions such as employee trainings, recruitments, compensation, and payroll
  • Contributes to the development of strategic plans and directs staff implementation of initiatives in alignment with strategic goals
  • Serves as a consultative Human Resources resource and liaison. Interprets, advises on, applies and disseminates complex policies, procedures, and options to leadership and employees; and recommends best strategies according to established objectives and goals
  • Audits human resources reports to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures
  • Receives and responds to inquiries in-person, via email, and through various communication mediums and relays information to appropriate entities
  • Facilitates and processes complex transactions and programs according to established policies and procedures
