About The Position

Provides intermediate level systems programming and management functions for large scale, high performance computing systems at the Center for Advanced Research Computing (CARC). This role involves administration, integration, and maintenance of parallel high performance computing systems, clusters, advanced filesystems, enterprise storage systems, visualization environments, and networks. The position works with other high-performance computing and systems administration staff to accomplish complex system integration, deployment, and administration projects, system performance analyses, problem resolution, and system security initiatives. Additionally, it involves working with senior staff on the development of system management strategies, architectural assessments, system tools, and software for the administration of production systems. This role also provides technical assistance and consultation for faculty, researchers, students, and technical staff on the use of high-performance computing platforms, and collaborates with other staff and departmental entities to provide comprehensive support for academic, commercial, and government users across various research disciplines.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • At least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Good working knowledge of high-performance computing systems, scalable, parallel architectures, and Linux operating systems.
  • Knowledge of advanced data storage technologies and high-speed network interfaces.
  • Ability to contribute to the development of technical design decisions involving software or hardware implementation strategies.
  • Ability to monitor system usage and performance statistics and to understand the impacts of operating system tuning parameters.
  • Basic knowledge of one or more high-level programming languages such as C, C++, or Fortran.
  • Good working knowledge of one or more scripting languages such as csh, Bash, Awk, perl, Python, etc.
  • Skilled experience in the installation and configuration of operating systems and applications software.
  • Experience with complex problem resolution procedures, testing and evaluation methods, and programming tools.
  • Experience with network security procedures and protocols.
  • Ability to assist technical management and Director in gathering user requirements and planning and designing computer systems.
  • Ability to understand and follow established methods and procedures for the integration, testing and installation of system modifications.
  • Ability to analyze requirements and determine computational resource impacts.
  • Ability to analyze complex problems, interpret operational needs, and develop integrated, creative solutions.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency with HPC resource managers and job scheduling tools such as SLURM.
  • Knowledge of using HPC cluster management and provisioning tools such as Warewulf.
  • Familiarity with academic computing environments and working with PIs, faculty members, and students.
  • Experience managing IB and Ethernet HPC networks.
  • Direct datacenter, server hardware, and cabling experience.
  • Experience with directory services and authentication systems such as FreeIPA.
  • Experience creating technical documentation for systems and processes.
