HPC Infrastructure Engineer - Classified Environment

Oak Ridge National Laboratory•Oak Ridge, TN

About The Position

The Field Intelligence Operations Division seeks an experienced High-Performance Computing (HPC) Infrastructure Engineer to design, deploy, integrate, and sustain advanced computing infrastructure for classified Department of War, Department of Energy, and Intelligence Community missions. In a national laboratory environment, the engineer will provide expertise in HPC architecture, GPU-accelerated computing, Linux clusters, high-performance storage and networking, and infrastructure automation, delivering secure, scalable, reliable capabilities that comply with federal cybersecurity requirements. The role supports classified HPC capabilities for national security by strengthening computational capacity, infrastructure resilience, cybersecurity compliance, and operational readiness, while enabling emerging technologies and mission-driven computing requirements. The engineer will collaborate with cybersecurity and Information Assurance teams and mission, program management, and technical stakeholders. ORNL expects employees to align their behavior and work with its values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service and to foster a respectful workplace and equal opportunity.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, information technology, or a related technical discipline, and at least five years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience designing, deploying, administering, or sustaining HPC clusters or large-scale Linux computing infrastructure.
  • Strong technical knowledge of Linux systems, cluster management, GPU computing, high-performance networking, and enterprise storage.
  • Experience with infrastructure automation, scripting, system troubleshooting, and performance optimization.
  • Ability to develop technical documentation, evaluate infrastructure requirements, and independently resolve complex engineering challenges.
  • Active TS, Q, or TS/SCI clearance is required for consideration; ability to obtain and maintain required federal security clearances and access authorizations.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance. The position is subject to pre-placement and ongoing random drug testing; random polygraph testing may also apply due to the SCI requirement.
