About The Position

The University of New Mexico Health Sciences IT (HSIT) department is seeking a senior-level technical professional to provide advanced leadership and operational support for high-performance and data-intensive research computing environments that serve health sciences initiatives. This role is central to enabling data-driven research, bioinformatics, and artificial intelligence in healthcare through secure, reliable hybrid computing infrastructure spanning on-premises systems, cloud platforms, and high-speed research networks. The position plays a key role in supporting grant-funded research and ensuring research computing services remain compliant, scalable, and sustainable. Under general direction, the successful candidate will serve as a principal technical resource and subject-matter expert for research computing, working closely with researchers, principal investigators, HSIT, and information security teams. Responsibilities include designing, implementing, and operating hybrid research environments; supporting secure computing and enclave operations; and enabling advanced research workflows through high-performance computing (HPC), GPU accelerated systems, high-speed data transfer capabilities and low latency interconnect technologies. This role requires strong collaboration skills and the ability to translate complex research needs into robust technical solutions. This position offers an opportunity to directly support nationally competitive research by contributing to the design and evolution of critical infrastructure, monitoring emerging technologies, and identifying strategic improvements in high-performance computing, cloud services, and secure research environments. The role also contributes to infrastructure planning, cost projections, and sustainability efforts that support ongoing and future externally funded research initiatives.

  • Bachelor's degree
  • At least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution and/or experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified may be interchangeable on a year-for-year basis.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated experience designing, implementing, and supporting high-performance computing (HPC) or large-scale research computing environments.
  • Experience administering and integrating hybrid computing infrastructures, including on-premises systems and major cloud platforms.
  • Experience supporting secure or restricted research computing environments, such as security enclaves or regulated healthcare or research systems.
  • Hands-on experience with Linux system administration and management in research or high-performance computing environments.
  • Experience designing and managing HPC and GPU-based server infrastructure to support compute-intensive workloads.
  • Familiarity with high-speed research networking, including Internet2 (I2) connectivity and related architectures.
  • Familiarity with high-speed interconnect technologies (e.g., InfiniBand) supporting low-latency, high-throughput computing environments.
  • Experience implementing and supporting high-performance data transfer solutions, such as Globus.
  • Experience with research cloud governance and environments, including AWS Control Tower and Azure research tenants (e.g., NIH STRIDES-aligned environments).
  • Knowledge of system hardening, access controls, and security best practices for infrastructure supporting sensitive research data.
  • Experience collaborating with researchers, principal investigators, and IT/security teams in support of grant-funded projects.
  • Ability to analyze complex technical requirements and recommend scalable, sustainable architectures aligned with institutional standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while providing senior-level technical leadership in complex research computing environments.
