About The Position

The Western Piedmont Council of Governments (WPCOG) is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented professional to serve as a Housing Inspector. This position plays an important role in supporting safe, sanitary, and quality housing opportunities within our communities through the administration of the Section 8 Housing Program. The Housing Inspector performs technical and administrative work involving inspections of rental properties participating in the Section 8 Housing Program. Responsibilities include conducting initial and follow-up inspections to ensure compliance with federal housing quality standards, maintaining inspection records, communicating with tenants and landlords, and assisting with housing program operations. Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school is required.
  • Ability to perform field inspections in indoor and outdoor environments.
  • Ability to walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb as needed during inspections.
  • Ability to lift or move objects up to 20 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to operate a computer and prepare inspection documentation.
  • Applicant must have an active driver's license and be able to operate a motor vehicle.

Nice To Haves

  • Coursework or training in housing inspections is preferred.
  • Previous experience in housing inspections or a related field is preferred.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct initial, annual, and follow-up inspections of rental properties participating in the Section 8 Housing Program.
  • Inspect properties for compliance with federal housing quality standards related to health, safety, sanitation, electrical systems, plumbing, and structural integrity.
  • Identify deficiencies and issue inspection reports and notices of required corrections.
  • Schedule inspections and coordinate with tenants and landlords.
  • Re-inspect properties to verify completion of required repairs.
  • Maintain accurate inspection records, reports, and activity logs.
  • Answer questions from landlords, tenants, and the public regarding inspection requirements and program standards.
  • Assist applicants by explaining the Section 8 Housing Program and housing search process.
  • Support division operations through report generation, file maintenance, and other administrative tasks as assigned.
