About The Position

The City of Springfield is seeking applicants for the position of Housing Inspector I within the Office of Public Works, Building & Zoning Division. This role involves assisting in and performing routine housing inspections to ensure compliance with municipal ordinances. The position requires the preparation of reports, assisting in data collection for legal proceedings, conferring with property owners, and generating violation reports for minor zoning infractions.

Requirements

  • Knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of high school.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain ICC Property Maintenance Inspector Certification within time frame specified by the City of Springfield.
  • Possession of a valid Class D driver’s license.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in property management or building trades is preferred.
  • Preference for employment in all positions with the city shall be given to applicants who are full-time city residents.
  • Current City employees must have completed their probationary period and attained certified status in their current position.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in and perform routine housing inspections to enforce compliance with requirements as set forth in municipal ordinances governing particular facilities.
  • Prepare activity reports and records of inspections and related correspondence.
  • Assist with collection and preparation of data and other documentary evidence for use in prosecution of cases of non-compliance; appear and testify at informal hearings and legal proceedings.
  • Confer with property owners, property agents, and the public in problems and methods required for compliance with applicable laws and ordinances.
  • Generate violation reports and citations for minor zoning violations which are easily identifiable.
