About The Position

The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE), Office of Special Education and Early Learning, Division of State Schools, Kentucky School for the Blind (KSB) in Louisville (Jefferson County) has an opening for a Houseparent II, 3rd Shift. The Kentucky School of the Blind (KSB) has nearly 180 years of service whose mission is to provide comprehensive educational services to all Kentucky students who are blind and visually impaired, Kindergarten to age 21. KSB prides itself on helping all Kentucky students who are blind and visually impaired to develop their talents, their skills and attitudes to become confident, competent and independent adults. Currently KSB has a vacant Houseparent II position in the Residential Section for third shift. This position offers a rewarding opportunity to work in a dynamic, student-centered environment focused on empowering the Blind and Visually Impaired community. The successful candidate will play an essential role in advancing KSD’s mission and values while benefiting from the support, training, and benefits of Kentucky state government employment.

Requirements

  • One year of experience working with individuals in an instructional or institutional setting.
  • College may substitute for the work experience on a year-for-year basis.

Responsibilities

  • Provide care, supervision, and instruction to a unit or units of blind and visually impaired residential students at the Kentucky School for the Blind.
  • Supervise students in dormitory programs to maintain accountability for student’s whereabouts, safety, and welfare. Maintain cleanliness of rooms and clothing. Provide tutoring and homework assistance.
  • Escort students to and supervise in cafeteria, recreational activities, and school sponsored events. Monitor and guide students in appropriate table manners and eating habits. Prepare dinners as needed.
  • As needed, supervise during emergency plan situations, i.e., inclement weather, and weekends that campus is open.
  • Maintain records pertinent to dorm operations and discipline.
  • Aid students with personal hygiene and toileting, activities of daily living and student homework.
  • Provide explicit and direct instruction in life skills and activities of daily living.
