About The Position

The St. Johns County Solid Waste Division oversees the effective solid waste operations throughout the County through its solid waste ordinance, exclusive residential contract, and its non-exclusive, solid waste franchise program. This involves weekly curbside collections of residential waste for nearly 120,000 residences including household garbage, recycling, and yard waste. In addition, the County also provides oversight of commercial/ industrial solid waste and construction & demolition debris collections through its franchise agreements. The newly selected Household Hazardous Waste Technician will join the team responsible for the ensuring seamless, solid waste operations within the County. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent recognized certification.
  • A minimum of six (6) yeas of related experience in solid waste operations, environmental services, or hazardous materials handling.
  • An Associates degree in environmental science, public administration, ir a related field may substitute for two (2) years of experience.
  • A Bachelors degree in a related field may substitute four (4) years of the required experience.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain the following certifications: Initial Transfer Station Operator (FDEP), MRF Spotter (FDEP), and Hazardous Waste Operator (OSHA).
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and all endorsements necessary to legally operate vehicles used while assigned to this position.
  • Must possess good interpersonal and communication skills in order to serve others.
  • Must be able to comprehend, speak and write the English language.
  • Must be able to operate a computer.

Responsibilities

  • Collects household hazardous waste from the drop-off center; documents and ensures the proper transporting of materials to the Tillman Ridge facility.
  • Identifies, labels, and stores residential hazardous waste; assists in arranging materials for pickup by a certified licensed hazardous waste processing firm.
  • Assists at community collections events to ensure all household hazardous wastes are handled and transported to the Tillman Ridge facility.
  • Maintains proper certifications for handling, storing, and disposing of household hazardous wastes.
  • Maintains data records and reports required by local, state and federal agencies.
  • Answers questions and concerns from the general public, officials, and county personnel regarding household hazardous wastes.
  • Ensures that contract specifications for handling and processing household hazardous waste are met.
  • Inspects local Small Quantity Generators (SQG) to assure that regulatory requirements are in compliance and prepares FDEP reports documenting compliance.
  • Assists in random local checks at the transfer station as required by the FDEP; follows-up on any contaminated loads and prepares appropriate reports for submission to proper agencies.
  • Maintains a full-time presence on the job.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
